Need to hear some stories..

At this point I feel like I'm going to be pregnant forever... even though I know that's not the case.. and I'm only one day past my due date.

I get really discouraged because it seems like any story I hear about having a baby past your due date (even 1-2 days) seems to be an induction story.  It's like you're either early, or you get induced.  I really really really really don't want to be induced, but going past 41 or 42 weeks at this point feels frustrating too.

(I'm also still not dilating, and my baby boy is still very high up....) Which they say doesn't matter at all... but I'm really beginning to think it matters a lot.

That being said.. if you have a story about going into labor on your own at any point past your due date, PLEASE share it here... I need a little something to lift my spirits today.

Re: Need to hear some stories..

  • My BFF just had her son 11 days ago and she went into spontaneous labour at 40w3d . She had her membranes stripped on the 7th, went to bed on the 8th and woke up with contractions and her water breaking at 3:30am on the 9th. Unless you are other risks there is no reason to get induce before 10 days past due or more with monitoring. You still have time!

  • I was due yesterday and my water broke this morning!  I thought I was going to have to be induced too (my mom never went into labor on her own so I figured I'd have the same fate).  I hadn't had any contractions (just some BH that I wasn't even sure were BH) and the past 2 weeks I stayed at 1/2cm/50%. GL, I hope it happens soon for you!

  • I don't have a story, but I'd love to hear some too!  It's very depressing, and I feel like I'm just waiting.  It feels like it's never going to happen, even though I know that's not true.  Keep the stories coming, ladies!

  • Glad you posted this!  Today is my due date and i'm hoping to go soon!
  • Ditto! I needed this post! Please, more stories! My DS #1 came a few days early so I thought for sure this one would come earlier too. And I had pre-term labor and a positive fetal fibronectin swab at 33 weeks, and yet we are still baking! I am really not wanting to be induced!

  • I am so glad you pasted this...I have not reached my due date yet but I have made 0 progress in the last 3 weeks (Have been 80% eff and 1cm since Feb 3)...But my labor buddy had her baby 1 day after her due date and that was her first.....

  • My 1st was 10 days "late" [and that was after they adjusted my due date by moving it forward 2 weeks! So 30 years ago he would have been nearly a month late!] and I went into labor on my own. He was 7lbs and 13 oz so a perfectly normal size and I had an water birth with him.

My 2nd was 3 days "late" and I went into labor naturally with him as well. He was 8lbs and 12 oz.

I;ve had 2 friends in the past year each have babies almost 2 weeks late and induction was scheduled but they went into labor naturally before hand.

I am expecting this one to be late as well. Everyone else seems to expect her to arrive before my due date and are asking how I feel. Well I feel fine and am expecting her to make some moves after my due date. And am ok with that. I feared having a baby early far more than late.

  • DS was born at 40w2d.  At my 40w appointment I was a fingertip dilated and he was high.  I started having mild contractions at like 3 am ~45 mins apart.  They were erratic and mild all day long.  At ~7 pm they picked up really fast and within 1/2 an hour they became 5 min apart.  I went to the hospital at 8pm and I was still only a 1cm.  DS was born at 11:30pm that night so 3.5 hours later.  He was 6lb 13 oz and 19 3/4 inches long.  Once things started they went really fast...

    Good luck.

  • With my first, he was born at 10 days late, labor started three days earlier and built up slowly.  When I went in to get checked because the contractions were regular (the day before he was born) I got the ever discouraging "could be today, could still be next week" talk.  Well, it turns out they never went away and he was born without any type of inducing ten days after my due date.

With my second (11 years later) I was also adamant about not getting induced.  My doctor took my latest possible due date of 8/3 (there were several, all about a week apart, I wasn't totally sure) and didn't schedule an induction until 8/18, which would have been 42 weeks 1 day.  At eight days late, I felt like things were starting and went in for an appt that afternoon.  I was about 1.5cm, which to me meant things really were starting because I was not dilated at all the week before.  He stripped my membranes, I got some good contractions the rest of that afternoon but they died down and I got a great night of sleep.  The next morning, I bounced about two feet in the air on an exercise ball while playing with my boobies (quite a sight, I have to say) and got the contractions rolling again.  She was born that night at 9 days late.

Waiting is hard, but I chose the glass half full approach.  I knew that every night when I went to bed it was one more day down.  Also, I think it's hard to count down to a due date, then you start counting up with the days late.  It gets discouraging.  I always look at the date two weeks past my due date and keep the countdown going.  So right now, sure, there's four days til I'm due, so I just figure I have, at most, 18 days of being pregnant left, that's my countdown number.

  •    Hang in there, Girl! With our first, I didn't go past my due date, but she wasn't early either. She was born on her due date. I went to having absolutely no signs of labor to active labor, literally, overnight. I'm 38 weeks and 5 days with our second daughter and it's looking like I'll go the full 40 again.

Way to stay strong about not being induced! LO will come when he's ready and as long as neither one of you are in trouble, why not let him stay comfy for a little longer? Because, once they're born, they start growing up...and it goes by FAST! :)

Best of luck to you! Keep your thoughts positive, even if you're uncomfortable - believe me, I'm having to heed my own advice at this point! :)

I had my DD at 40w2d with no induction.... no pitocin... my water broke on it's own.. everything.   It was a great experience.

She came out wide-eyed and ready to greet the world.  The nurses told me that you could tell she was a 40+ week baby because of how alert she was.

  • My neighbor had both of her babies exactly one week late, spontaneous labors. Average gestation for a first time mom is 41 weeks, 1 day.

Beyond my neighbor, I know many people who were just a few days late and went into labor on their own.

  • Great post!  I really needed this today.  And glad to hear that 40+ week babies are more alert.  It makes sense but didn't really think about it.  I get so scared every now and then because movements have decreased a ton, didn't realize how hard it would be emotionally, to be past due.

  • My DD arrived at 40w 2d, no induction necessary, contractions started on Saturday morning and she was born without any help from meds (other than the epi) on Sunday morning.  I was starting to think induction was necessary too but she was a perfectly healthy 6lb 4oz, just a couple days late!  I guess she just wanted me to spend my birthday in labor this year!

Don't worry, even the inductions my friends have had went well...it is all about what is best for baby.

ETA: I had an appointment the Tuesday before I went into labor and was 0 cm and 0% effaced, when I went to the hospital four days later I was 2.5 cm and 100% effaced.

  • I went into labor on my own with my first at 41 weeks 2days.  No induction.  It definitely can happen!  Lots of luck to you!
