Advice for using a carrier or sling while carrying a diaper bag/ backpack/ purse please!

I posted this on another board but realized that you all are probably experts regarding this conundrum! :)  Could you give this first-time mamma some advice on how you carry your LO around while carrying all his/her stuff, and your stuff at the same time?  I want to feel as lightweight as possible, but also feel prepared with all the necessities (e.g. cloth diapers, cloth wipes, wet bag, ointment, wallet, phone, change of baby clothes, etc.).

Note: We've registered for a sling, the Beco Butterfly carrier, the Skip Hop changing pad tote, and Planet Wise wet/dry bags. We're also inheriting a big Skip Hop diaper bag, but I don't want to carry that around while I'm carrying baby around too (better for when I'm breaking out the stroller).

Do I need a small sling bag, small backpack, etc?  And how does that work when you're wearing a carrier or sling at the same time?  I just can't wrap my brain around it.  Thanks for all your help!

Re: Advice for using a carrier or sling while carrying a diaper bag/ backpack/ purse please!

  • I have a diaper bag I just wear on my shoulder while I wear the carrier.
Not really any different than a purse. Of course my diaper bag really is just an overgrown purse, so that helps.

When DH and the babe go out, DH has a backpack he wears on his back,  with the carrier in front.

  • A backpack is easiest for me. Messenger bags were awkward, and purses kept slipping off my shoulders. A backpack was a no-fail. :) I have the JuJuBe BFF, but any backpack would work.

  • It's really not a big deal. It's easier to carry the baby in a carrier than it is to NOT carry the baby in a carrier. People carry a baby and a bag all the time! I find if I have Owen in the sling, it frees up a hand for other stuff.

I have a one-shouldered diaper bag. I don't love it, but it's got me this far.

  • When LO is in a front carry, I use a diaper backpack. For my purse, I got one with a long strap I can cross over my chest. DS can touch the strap if he wants, as it is over my chest near his face (but not over him). For back carries--same thing with the purse. For the diaper bag, I either carry the backpack or we go light and use a wet/dry bag that looks like a purse, like this...

  • Thank you all so much for your motherly wisdom!  I now feel confident in registering for a small backpack for a diaper bag.  Now I can peacefully daydream about carrying LO around town :)

  • I've always used a messenger bag (usually Timbuk2, but I have a trkfld one that I used for awhile), and adjusted the strap to be long enough to go over me and the baby in the carrier. It's also nice because I can still reach in the bag without having to take it off. Also! I definitely always carried *the* minimum amount of stuff needed for the baby. hth
