It's a little late in coming off, but the majority of the cord stump fell off while I was trying to put some rubbing alcohol on it during a diaper change. However, part of the base of the cord that was still yellow and fleshy remained inside the belly button. Will that come out on its own, or should I let his pediatrician know? I'm going to continue putting rubbing alcohol on it to help dry it out and encourage it to fall out. Anyone have experience with how I can help it along? Since the outer part of the cord stump is off, it's harder to get at now.
Scar's stump fell off really early, at 5 days, and a little piece stayed. At her 1 week appointement her pediatricion told us to keep putting alcohol on it, but it never healed. At her 1 month appointement, the pediatricion put silver nitrate on it and that took care of the issue.
Actually, if you don't put alcohol on the cord it will fall off faster. Doctors will tell you to use the alcohol and we did initially but stopped after a few days and had no problems. You may give it a few days without the alcohol and if it doesn't come out, give your pediatrician a call just to be on the safe side.
DS's whole stump was still there this morning. We went to his 2 week appt this am and the doctor moved it around and it came off. I was so glad! (and a little queasy and what he did!) What's left sounds a lot like what you have there. The yellow base...the doctor saw what was left and didn't have issue with it. Said we could even do full submersion baths and use some soap as long as we rinse it well. I'm SO glad that's all we have left of it now. He didn't instruct us to use any alcohol or anything else.
