If you tested + for GBS...

Did you feel that it had any affect on your labor/delivery?  Was your baby affected at all?

TIA!

Re: If you tested + for GBS...

  • I had it with #2, but not the first time or last time. Nothing was really different, except I got extra antibiotics in the IV and had to stay in the hospital for an extra day. Baby wasn't affected at all :)

  • I tested positive with both pregnancies. With my last pregnancy I delivered too quick to get the antibiotics before I delivered. (I delivered 20 min after I got checked in to my room) LO and I had no complications. The only thing is that I had to stay in the hospital for 48 hr after delivery just to monitor LO for any complications.

  • Just some extra antibiotics every 4 hours until I delivered, I didn't even notice and it didn't effect anything at all.

This exactly.  I stressed so much about it, but the nurses assured me that it was extremely common and to relax!

  • If you wanna be able to move around for comfort measures it can be more difficult hooked to an IV.  You can't go to the restroom w/o lugging the pole and everything with you as well.

Same here. I had an IV in anyways so it didn't make a difference.

  • Just had my first baby, i tested positive. Its nothing major just get your antibiotics in IV form, but it is very important for you to get checked if you think you are in labor so you can get medication before you deliver. i went to hospital at the first feeling of contractions becuz the nurse said cuz i was positive they wanted me to come in, you dont want to be so far dialated when u go to hospital to deliver and not get that med.  but no worries no issues no difficulties because you r positive....
  • Not at all. I was worried about it too because I wanted a natural birth and didn't want to be connected to an IV the whole time. I had the antibiotics run for about 15 minutes when I got to the hospital and then disconnected me from the IV so I could walk around and do what I want. And they said they would have broken my water when I got to the hospital to speed things up because it was bulging, but they waited 4 hours so they could start the second round of antibiotics before they broke my water. So really no big effects at all. I had my pain med-free birth and my baby was healthy, so in the end I wasn't bothered by it at all.

  • I tested positive for my 2nd pregnancy. My labor went so fast I was fully dilated just 45 minutes after I noticed contractions. By the time the anesthesiologist came with the epidural they hadn't gotten any antibiotics in me yet. My water hadn't broken yet so they did the epi and let me labor comfortably for 4 hours to get the antibiotics. Then dr broke my water and he was out in 2 pushes.

So I think needing to slow down for the antibiotics made his delivery easier on me because he was coming so fast. No other effects though.

  • Was + for both pregnancies and no effect.  This time I didn't get the 2nd bag of meds so DD had to have an additional test, but no big deal and all was fine.

  • The only way it affected my labor was by slowing it down... they waited to break my water until I had both sets of antibiotics. But baby was fine.

I've heard the odds of a problem are 1 in 200 without antibiotics and 1 in 4000 with antibiotics.

  • My baby had the cord around his neck and I stalled out twice at 4cm and 8cm because of it. Therefore, my labor was 24 hours long. So I got a few doses of the antibiotics at the hospital during that time (my temp kept going up and baby's heartrate kept dropping). I ended up with a vaginal delivery after a close call with almost needing a c-section. If I get pregnant again and am GBS+ I will take probiotics beforehand because after leaving the hospital, I got cracked nipples while breastfeeding and they wouldn't heal. I had lots of shooting breast pain and ended up being treated for a fungal infection (yeast/thrush) likely due to the antibiotics I had in the hospital.
