Going from crib to bed

We had no plans to move DD just yet out of her crib, but we saw her (unsuccessfully) try to climb out of it on Saturday.  DH suggested we let her nap in the bed on Sunday and see how it went. Well, it worked!

So she slept there overnight last night and she's still there as of 8:30 this morning! We figured we'd try it last night since we're both off work today, so if she had a rough night we could relax today instead of having to go to work.

I'd call it a success! Although today's nap and tonight could be a whole different story.

The only thing is that we always leave her door open so we can hear her in the middle of the night, and DH insisted on closing it in case she got out of bed and fell down the stairs. I see his point, but I like having her door open so I think we'll have to get a gate for the top of the stairs instead.

Re: Going from crib to bed

  • I would probably get a gate for the top of the steps, one where you can screw into the wall (nail in) and it won't go any place. We don't close A's room completely. Do you have bed rails? You could also get some of them, to keep your mind at ease. Yeah for big girl bed success.

  • Oh we definitely have a bed rail, and the other side is against the wall, so no worries there.

  • Yay! Glad it was successful!

  • Glad it was an easy transition!

My suggestion is to get a cheap monitor for her room.  Aiden still uses one.  It just gives me more peace of mind knowing he's behind a closed door, and isn't going to wander out and get into something he shouldn't/get hurt.  Plus it reinforces that he needs to stay in bed till we get him.  When he wakes up, he lets us know he's up by talking to us on the monitor.

  • I know some people who keep the door open and keep the gate at the bedroom door since babies rooms are often baby proofed better than the rest of the upstairs.

  • Glad it went well. We plan on transitioning Sophee this summer, but we will have the bed in the room. Hopefully having the bed there, she will play on it and take naps there so when she transitions there fully it won't be too new.

  • That's awesome that the transition went so smoothly!  Hopefully she keeps it up for you. :)

I'm dreading doing the switch w/ DS bc he's so active... We're planning to either install a baby gate at his door or turn his door knob around so that we can lock it from the outside (pediatrician's tip).  We do keep his door shut though already bc it's safer in the event of fire, and just use the monitor to tell us when he's up.

  • Wow, your baby is a big girl now.  Congrats on a good no crib night!
