Iron supplements??

I was told today that I am borderline anemic and should take an iron supplement with my prenatal. The dr. Recommended slow fe. Has anyone else been told this?? Seems like a lot of iron to take.

Re: Iron supplements??

  • I was on slow-FE during my first pregnancy and that helped a lot - this time around I started out on slow-FE but my iron still kept going down so I was put on a prescription iron. It IS a lot of iron but if you are anemic, it is a sign that your body needs more - and remember, you are growing another person so if taking up a lot of nutrients from you.

I don't know if your doc told you but also be careful not to take the iron supplement with calcium since that decreases the ability to take it up. Apparently, taking it with vitamin C is great!

  • I am taking it. Just make sure you don't take any other vitamins for 2 hours.

  • I'm on 2 extra tabs (325 mg of ferrous sulfate a piece) of iron now since January. I take mine in the morning with OJ and a grapefruit. That doesn't help my heartburn, but it helps with the iron absorption. Take it separate from your prenatal since your prenatal has calcium, and that binds to iron and makes absorption less effective.

  • I was told to take the same thing, but haven't been able to find it.

  • I'm taking an extra iron supplement every other day. My iron was borderline on the low side, so the doc recommended I boost it up some before delivery.

eta: it's not the slow FE. He didn't recommend a specific one.

  • My Dr. told me Im borderline too, I asked her if I should take a supplement, she said I could, but shouldn't everyday because it will cause constipation. She said to take it 2-3 times a week. So far its been easy, no constipation, I just take it every three days.

  • I just came from the doctor and I am borderline too.  She said 1 tab is enough , including the prenatals.  Just like others said, take them 2 hours or so apart.
