3rd Trimester

What are you doing to help sleep?

So I am just hoping that some of you with more experience might have some suggestions of things you have done that have helped you to sleep? I have been sleeping terrible for the last week or so and I cannot take it anymore. I am exhausted, I don't have any sick days at work or I would have taken one today just to catch up on sleep. I am so uncomfortable at night, even wiht my body pillow. I was a stomach sleeper so that has been really hard for me. Is there any medication you can take while pregnant that helps? I am open to trying ANYTHIGN at this point.

Re: What are you doing to help sleep?

  • I sleep with the ceiling fan on. It drives DH crazy since it is the middle of February, but it helps SO much!

  • I have been sleeping on the couch. It has a slight incline so, it gives me much better support for my belly and it helps me to flip if I need to adjust. It's not the most romantic of options, but it has helped me a ton.
  • Talk to your OB, when I was pregnant with DS #1, my midwife was able to give me a sleeping pill to help me get a good nights rest.  I think she gave me Ambien, but I don't remember.

  • My SIL took Ambien religiously while pregnant. My OB okay'd an occasional tyelenol PM for me. See what your OB recommends for you.

  • I was having difficulty sleeping for about 2 weeks. I was able to fall asleep in my bed but then I would wake up at about 2:30 and not be able to sleep anymore. I started going into the living room so I wouldn't wake my husband up and I found that I was able to fall asleep on the couch almost instantly. I would wake up again at about 6 and go back to bed. Try the couch or a recliner. The change might help your body sleep better
  • With my first and now my second pregnancy, sleeping on the couch at an incline has provided me with the best sleep.  It's firmer than my bed and I don't try to roll around.  When laying flat on my side I find I either wake up rolling over or half of my body falls asleep because I don't move at all.  The couch has been way better for me.

  • I have been taking the unisom sleep tabs, half of one works wonders. My doc recommended them during first tri for nausea and I've continued taking them.

  • One Benadryl. Two if I really need it. Skip the Tylenol pm unless you need it for pain. The pm part is just benadryl. My doctor gave me the ok with my first pregnancy.

  • Benedryl, Unisom, and Tylenol PM are all safe to take according to my doctor.  I totally know what you're talking about being so uncomfortable... my hips have been hurting and when I told my Dr., she said it was perfectly fine to take Tylenol PM to help with the pain and help me fall asleep.

I also got a 4" memory foam topper and it has made a huge difference... I've had to sleep away from home two nights and both were awful because I didn't have that extra padding that helped with the pain!

Good luck!  Hope you get some relief!

  • I take tylenol pm nightly. I knew my dr said it was okay but double checked today to see if taking it every night was okay, she said yes.

The time spent in bed before dozing off was so uncomfortable.

  • The snoogle helps me soooo much! DH loves it too, lol. I also got a wedge from BRU but it is kinda weird.

I am totally against taking sleep aids due to family members that have gotten hooked. It just makes it worse!

  • I have terrible allergies, so my OB ok'd one Benedryl at night... which definitely helps me to fall asleep.  It's the staying asleep that is tough for me... not sure if it is how uncomfortable most positions are or if it is the 3-4 trips a night to the restroom to pee!  But either way, I cannot remember the last time I had a good night of sleep.  Sometimes I go out to the couch and put the TV on quietly (so I don't wake my hubby up) and that usually helps me fall back to sleep.  Good luck... hope you get some rest soon! =)

  • My doctor ok'd Benadryl to take at night...it's safe to take up to 2 before bed if 1 doesn't do the trick.  I also use a full-size boppy pillow to sleep with paired with a boppy pillow wedge to tuck under my belly.  These are the only things I have found thus far that have helped me.  Good luck!

  • Lurking a little :) My OB told me it's safe to take Unisom, It's only a class B med so he said it's safer than any RX sleeping pill. It seems to work for the most part and is pretty cheap.

I do notice on the nights when I think I'm tired enough to sleep without it, I wake up in the middle of the night and cannot for the life of me get back to sleep... But when I do take it I get a good solid 6-8 hours of sleep.

Good Luck! I'm not looking forward to the uncomfortable sleeping in 3rd tri :P

  • When I have trouble sleeping, I sleep on the reclining part of our couch. I find this helps tremendously with aches and pains. Plus, I don't have to roll over in the middle of the night, which requires a ridiculous amount of effort now.  I also find that the slight incline must take some of the pressure off my bladder because I can sleep up to twice as long without getting up to pee!
