Sleep training

James does pretty good at night, but wakes up at least once a night and immediately sits up in his crib (half awake normally) but he will not lay back down by himself (we have a video monitor so I watch him), if I let him just sit in there waiting he ends up standing up in his crib and pointing and talking to his monitor. Can anyone give me some tips on getting him to sleep through the night?

Re: Sleep training

  • What do you do to get him back down? Just go in there and lay him down again or do you have to soothe/rock etc?

Our video monitor has a button on the remote that plays music. I'd just push that when Emily would wake up in the middle of the night and she'd fall asleep to the music. When she wakes up now, which is pretty rare, she'll just chat to herself. Sometimes it's for more than an hour but she doesn't cry so I just let her talk herself to sleep again.

I say if he's not crying I'd just let him talk it out until he gets sleepy again.

  • I think I will try this. At least get him in the habit of putting himself back to sleep. Thanks for the help.

  •  I have no idea. We bedshare...and if he wakes up I usually rock him or nurse him to sleep.

  • Usually if E wakes up she just crawls around until she finds a paci and then goes back to sleep.  If she wakes up more than that (which is pretty rare anymore) and is just talking or fussing then I just let her go and put herself back to sleep.  If she wakes up and actually cries then I give her ten minuets to try and go back to sleep (I can't tell you how many times I ran in there a minuet or two after she started crying and she had her paci in her mouth, still crying, but laying down with her eyes closed and about to pass back out so we give her some time now).  If she doesn't go back to sleep in that ten minuets then I go cuddle her for a few minuets and give her a little bit of a sippy cup then when I put her back in her crib she puts herself back to sleep.
