Birth Story~Long

So I have had the ideal pregnancy.  No morning sickness, never was very fatigued, all my check ups went well, we couldn't have been happier.  The last month or so I have been very tired but we were moving into a new house during my third trimester who wouldn't have been tired!  Two weeks ago at my first weekly doctors visit everything was fine except the protein count in my urine was a +3 (about 500 mg).  So the doctor ordered a 24 hour urine test.  She wasn't worried because beside a little swelling I had no other preeclampsia indicators.  That was a Tuesday but the doctor told me I could wait until the weekend to do the urine collection so I didn't have to do it at school.  That weekend I had my in laws check my blood pressure and it was quite high but I hadn't been sleeping well and we had been moving around so I didn't think too much about it.  Plus I was taking my urine in on Monday.

Monday morning I took my 24 hour urine in and asked for someone to check my blood pressure.  I almost walked out because I was running late for work and it took a few minutes to get called back.  (So glad I didn't!)  When they took my pressure it was 160/100, they rechecked it and it was the same.  At this point they told me to call work and tell them that I wouldn't be in and probably would be on bedrest for at least the week.  I spoke with my doctor and she said I would be 37 weeks on Thursday and we may induce then.  Meanwhile I needed to go to the hospital to get my blood pressure under control.

I got the hospital at 10:30 on Monday morning and they immediately got me in bed and hooked up to a BP cuff that cycled every 15 minutes.  At this point my BP was 180/100, not that there was anything to stress about right?  For the next few hours they had me rest and hydrate and my BP went down to 146/90 and they were pretty happy with that.  At this point I was really uncomfortable and asked to sit up in a chair.  10 minutes in a chair and my BP was 204/102.  My doctor called and told me that we were going to be inducing the next morning after they got my BP down.  They wanted to give me Magnesia to bring down the high BP but it is also used to stop premature labor.  So her plan was to induce and then give me the Mag.  But first they were going to give me Cervadil.  This is basically a little tampon like hormone patch that encourages my cervix to continue to dilate (I was at a 3 when I was admitted and starting to soften).  The hope with this is that it would jump start my cervix and get labor going with out pitocin.  That night the Cervadil started my cervical contractions and they gave me an Ambien to sleep but I didn't get much rest.  My BP was steady all night at 186/95.

Tuesday morning my doctor came in to check my progress.  I was dilated to 4.5 and really soft but since my blood pressure was still so high she had to start the magnesium.  She broke my water, got internal monitors placed and they got the magnesium started as well as pushing fluids.  The Mag got my blood pressure under control quickly but when she broke my water the cervical contractions (I believe these were just my cervix prepping in such a short time) got really intense.  They called the anesthesiologist to give me my epidural.  About an hour later I got my epi going (not that bad especially when you are in enough contraction pain).  They told me the epidural would help my BP as well.  Oh and it did!  All of a sudden my BP dropped to 85/50.  Next thing I know they were giving me Ephedrine to up my BP.  After they once again got my BP regulated they finally started the Pitocin to get my contractions going.  I should mention during all of this the baby was doing fantastic, she is such a trooper!  The Pitocin was started at about 10:30am and it took about 45 minutes for regular contractions to start.  They told me it would take a few hours for the Pitocin to get me to 10 and fully effaced.  Next thing we know the contractions are causing the baby's heartbeat to drop.  It was then that my doctor said enough is enough and that it was time to do a C-section.  But my stubborn child had other ideas, they put me on oxygen and she stabilized.

Labor-about one I started feeling some intense contractions through my epidural.  I told my husband that I was feeling some urges to push but we didn't expect to deliver until about 4 or 5.  We called the nurse and she seemed skeptical but checked my cervix...I was already at 9!  She was shocked and immediately called my doctor.  She was gone for 5 minutes and when she got back I was having to breath through the push urges.  She checked me again and I was 10 and fully effaced.  Once again she had to go call my doctor and tell her to get over to the hospital ASAP.  Luckily her office is only 10 minutes from the hospital.  She got there and I was already prepped I pushed for about 15 minutes and Claire was born.  I was surprised at how easy the delivery went.  Even though she was a month early Claire started crying immediately, no lung problems.  She didn't even have to go to the NICU.  Unfortunately the story does not end there.  I delivered the placenta and was getting stitched up but my doctor couldn't get my bleeding under control.  My epidural had worn off by now and they kept palpating my uterus to get it to clamp down as well as examining me internally to find the bleeding.  This was the most painful thing I have ever experienced.  About 20 minutes in my doctor gave me Newbain (IV narcotic) because I couldn't handle the pain.  She told me that the Magnesium I was on could cause clotting problems.  She found some internal tearing but was having trouble seeing them, if I didn't start clotting they were going to have to take me to and OR to get stitched up.  The doctor eventually stuffed me with gauze and told me that if I didn't start to clot in the next 10 minutes she would have to move me to get a better look internally.  During this time the Lactation consultant brought the baby over and breast fed her on my to help the uterus clamp down.  After an hour they got my bleeding controlled without going to the OR.  When all of this was going on I did get to hold the baby but because of the narcotics I was high as a kite.  At the end of the day I did have a beautiful healthy baby girl.  4 lbs 15 oz and 18.5 inches long.

Postpartum- Because of the high blood pressure I had to be on Magnesium for 24 hours after the birth.  When you are on magnesium they pump you full of fluids so you have to be on a catheter.  You are also not allowed out of bed.  So my sweet baby girl is born and I can't get out of bed.  It is hard to sit up because of the catheter and my stitches.  Wednesday was a bad day because I didn't get to bond with my baby and we were having trouble breast feeding.  That night I was moved to a recovery room.  That night we found out the Claire had jaundice and she was going to be put on a bili blanket.  The next morning I was informed that it was severe enough that they were sending me home with a bili blanket and she has to be on in 24/7.  She also would have to have blood testing done until her bilirueben levels started to decrease.

We are home now and everything is going well.  She is still on the bili blanket which is frustrating because she is tethered to the wall at all times and she has her days and nights confused.  But we love her to death!

Sorry this was so long but it was a long few days!  Hope no one else has to go through anything like this!

  • WOW!  Congrats on being home.  I know its must be hard to see your angel stuck to the wall but they would have never sent her home if they didn't feel she was doing great.

I am about to be in the same boat as you.  You story about the drs then the hospital sounds just like mine, but they sent me home the following day on bedrest.  They are going to see how long I make it bc I am not even 37 wks yet.

Congrats again.  Its all over and now you have a beautiful baby girl!!!

  • What an adventure! She is beautiful and even though it was rough for you, she made it safely. :) Our neighbor's baby was born jaundiced and he had to be on the bili blanket 24/7 with only 20 minutes off at a time so he could nurse. He was that way for a couple weeks. I hope Claire can get better soon.

Congratulations on the beautiful baby girl!

  • What a story to tell to your daughter someday! :-)  Congrats she is precious.  Glad to hear everything turned out well!
