Cloth Diapering

How can it stink so badly so soon???

I just started using CDs on my lil man as of yesterday.  His room reaks already!  The diaper service said if the wet bag gets stinky to put a little baking soda in, but it hasn't made a dent.  Am I still dealing with an extra sensitive sense of smell or is this stink part of cloth diapering?  What can I do to keep my house from smelling toxic? Please, any help would be wonderful!

  • My house DOES NOT stink at all...what diaper bag do you have?  Are you rinsing out the poop before putting them in the pail? Do you wash the wet bags every time you wash the diapers?...sorry for the questions just trying to figure out what's going on :)

Ditto all of this. I keep DD's diapers in an open wetbag all the time and the only time her room smells is if DH puts one of her ON dipes in the bag without rinsing it first.

  • Mine doesn't stink at all.  I will tell you that DS has strong urine and we get a super ammonia smell on laundry day (Day 3).  Maybe try a closed pail?

  • I noticed you mentioned you use a diaper service. Did they provide the pail and liner? Could that be what is smelling? Do the diapers smell before you put them on? What is the smell? Ammonia or barnyard? If the smell continues I would cancel the service and CD on your own.

  • Newborn poo/pee doesn't smell that strongly (and we never rinsed out our BFed poo)...so I'd be worried it's the diapers/bag that are actually the culprit. Are you formula feeding? If you get one of the fresh diapers wet with water...does it smell? If so...I'd cancel their service too...since they aren't clean.

  • Thank ladies for your feed back, and all the good questions.  I need to get a lidded waste can to put the wet bag in still.  I didnt notice a smell coming from the wet bags provided, it's a strong amonia smell.  The diaper liners and covers dont smell when I got them wet to test them either. LO has been pretty colicy and I found out the day before I started CDing that he has a milk/soy protien allergy.  I'm BFing as much as I can but do have to finish him off with formula a few times a day.  Could this have something to do with the strong odor? Could removing milk and soy from both our diets effect this?

I'm not sure if I can cloth diaper without a service, since I'm a single mom and will go back to work full time once leave is up.  How much time do you spend washing the diapers yourself? The CD service is the only one in town, not cheapper than plastic diapers, but creates WAY less trash, and better for potty training from what I hear.  Its all about time vs. price for me.  What do you suggest?

I FF my DD and never had a problem with odour either. How often are they picking up the diapers? Are you noticing the odour more after more than say 2 days? If you are that could be normal. When I do laundry on the third day it smells. Like eye burning smell. After all pee filled diapers have been in a bag for 3 days.

As for doing the CDing yourself being a single mom, the only thing you would have to do that you're not doing now, is wash about 3 extra loads of laundry a week. That is after you purchase the diapers. If you can afford to buy the diapers, I would really suggest doing it yourself. You'd probably safe yourself $ in the long run especially since you can sell the diapers in the end.
