Floor Model Car Seat...ugh!

So my sister bought me a Graco Snugfit on the internet, new in box, all tags on it. I just opened it, and it says "Display Only". Crap. So I assume it was probably stolen at some point. While I don't condone stealing, I don't want to throw away a perfectly good car seat (she did pay for it after all, so my karma is ok...) How can I find out if this car seat is safe? I googled it, and got nowhere. Is it exactly the same seat as you would buy in store, or is it different in some way? Anyone know? Thanks!

  • I would not use it.  Call Graco customer service and tell them what happened. (all you need to say is that it was a shower gift, no need to go into details.) They are awesome and I am sure they'll be able to help you out.

  • Your sister shoukd follow up with the website she bought it from. If they won't exchange it for a truly new seat, she should contest the sale with hercredit card company (assuming it was advertised as a legit sale).

This is what I would do.

  • Just so you know if it was stolen (I agree with PP it's an odd assumption to make) you can get into legal trouble for receiving stolen goods.

Tell your sister what the seat says.  I'm sure she paid out good money expecting a brand new seat.  Not some floor model that has had all sorts of mishandling done to it by people trying to figure out how it worked or how much stress it can take.

This is what I would do too.  I personally would be angry if I bought a gift for someone and found out it was a floor model.  I would want to look into it and you better believe I'd contest it if the site wouldn't exchange it.

Sure, if it was furniture or something, that is one thing, but I wouldn't want a carseat that people were messing around with in a store.

  • Here in Canada it is illegal to sell floor model car seats. I would get your sister to call the company that she bought it from. If she gets nowhere, I would call Graco. They will likely exchange it for a safe one.
