Preemies

And, how often does your LO poop?

DD has been home from the NICU two weeks today. She's pooped 4 times since then. Twice we've had to do glycerin suppositories, once rectal stim & once on her own. I feel like this is not often enough, & it's definitely less than she pooped in the NICU. Our pedi said BF babies can go up to 7 days without pooping, but she seems uncomfortable & is sooo gassy. We're doing EBM with Enfacare to make it 22 cal. She's also on Poly-Vi-Sol 1 ml daily.

  • enfacare and poly-vi-sol can constipate.  I wouldn't do the suppositories, though.  Just let nature take it's course.  You don't want her to be dependent on those.  Your pedi is right.  Your LO is probably gassy in general.  Very common for newborns.

  • when DD first came home from the NICU, she would sometimes go 2-3 days without pooping. I always felt so bad bc she was so gassy and seemed so uncomfortable, but my ped kept saying it was fine. She eventually started going more regularly after we switched her from the 22 cal Neosure to the 20 cal Similac advance.

  • Poop was always a concern of mine, DD would poop all day long in the NICU it felt like it - but right before we were discharged she went to once a day or once every other day - at home it went to once every 7-10 days, I would get so worried and she would be bloated and gassy and unconfortable but ALL her doctors would say it was normal normal normal (she was taking BM with neosure to 27 calories and poly vi sol and rocalcitriol (vit D supp) all of them constipate too) and the doctors would tell me as long as when she does finally poop that it was "normal" poop it was ok.  They told me to make sure her poop wasnt hard, that is when she is constipated. I would occasionally give her suppository or laxitive drops to get her to go when I felt like it had been too long but we got used to it. It didnt stop me from asking every doctor at every appointment about it. When we introduced formula, she started to poop more often, and now with solids we get one every other day or so. Shes one year old next month and shes been seen by GI and is just fine, maybe we just got blessed with less poopy babies!

  • My little guy is on a soy formula due to some lactose issues.   That said, it is super consitpating.  He's just shy of four months actual.  The poor little guy would howl and turn red when he tried to poop his little deer pellets (normal for soy formula according to the pedi).  I was told that I could give him 2 oz of water a day to soften it up.  It didn't help a great deal.  So, at three months actual I switched out one of the onces of water for prune juice.  And now the little guy poops somewhere between everyday and every other day, with a normal amount of fussiness, but not turning bright red and howling from the strain.  It's nice too because it looks more like peanut butter and less like little hard balls.
