HOLY MILK

I feel like I have a lot of breast milk. I meant A LOT. It drips down my nightgown and last night soaked the bed. LO is not eating enough of it yet at 5 days old to keep up with the flow. My breast feel full and strained all the time. Should I pump? I don't want to encourage more milk to come in, which I understand will happen when you increase "use". What can I do to make this less intense and continue to provide my baby with breast milk?

Re: HOLY MILK

  • I EBF my DS.  From the day my milk came in I pumped twice a day (9pm and 9am) and get a lot of milk (8-10 oz per session).  I put this all away in breastmilk storage bags and freeze them.  I've built up a decent stash and will continue to do this so that I have a lot of breastmilk back up.  If I didn't do this I also would have engorged leaking boobs.  Breastmilk is made on a supply and demand  basis.  You can either pump it and save it or just let your LO eat on demand and your supply will eventually even out.

  • Pump!  You can freeze it and use it later on when your supply starts to slow down!

  • Pump to relieve the strained feeling, but not until you are empty.  It will make you feel better, but shouldn't make the situation worse by encouraging more milk production.  Plus it is nice to have some stored milk.

  • Hi! Butting in from January board! First off, I think you are lucky! I would definitely save that milk and start a stash in the freezer. Secondly, look into Milkies Milk Savers. They save the milk that dribbles out at "inappropriate" times.
