Rejected from Spa...anyone else?

So, I am a member of one of those chain message places that you pay a monthly fee for a message and/or facial....i have no idea why, but I am so behind and haven't gotten one since before the holidays.  I have had some severe lower back pain and thought I was set with 3 prepaid messages...One of the first questions was about being pregnant.  At that point, they basically kicked me out (it is against their policy) and told me to come back at the beginning of my 2 trimester.  Asked my doctor's office and they disagreed and said that messages would be fine.  In the meantime, I am going to call around and see if any other message places would accept me, but I am little nervous about it...anyone else hear or experience anything like this?

Re: Rejected from Spa...anyone else?

  • DH got me a massage last weekend for v-day. I was actually worried about it and called and asked the spa. They said they do not do massages during the first tri. If dh would have told them initially they wouldn't have let him book it. I got a facial instead.

  • I've always heard that you can't get a message in the first tri.   Can you reschedule it for your 2nd tri?

  • No massages in the first tri!  You have to be careful with massages and acupuncture - I believe it's due to the pressure points in legs/feet - I assume they don't want the responsibility of if anything happens during a massage and acupuncture - you need to make sure that you have a professional who knows exactly what he/she is doing to avoid those pressure points.

  • My "do not do" list from my RE says no massages.

  • You'll get mixed opinions on this one. Studies have not shown ANY risk associated with first trimester massage from a therapist who is licensed in prenatal massage. Most places say no out of liability fears.Doctors will also have mixed opinions. My doctor (and my chiropractor) are fine with it.

I got rejected during my last pregnancy at 6 weeks when I tried to get a massage at the MGM in Vegas (don't ask me why I was in Vegas at 6 weeks pregnant). Tomorrow I'm flying to Phoenix for the week and I already booked a prenatal massage at the resort. They didn't ask how far along I was, but I'm half expecting them to deny me when they see me.

Yes, my sister is a massage therapist and I asked her about this on Friday.  She says that the only reason why massages are denied during the first semester is because of liability.  Basically, they don't want someone getting a massage, then having a miscarriage and blaming it on the massage.  She says, however, that there is no risk, but that we should avoid it just to be safe, until we're further along.

  • Oh man... I have never heard this.. I am supposed to be getting massages done with my MIL next weekend ... I havent told anyone other than my DH....Hmm
  • Thanks girls for your input!  I am not so much worried about losing the credits (I am sure they will freeze account) as much as I feel like it is my last resort for the lower back pain that I have been having.  It might have a lot  to do with the progesterone shots that I have been required to take.  But, after reading posts and searching in cyberspace, I will probably just suck it up and just keep using the heating pads and OD on icy hot for now.  It is just a little scary with all the conflicting information.  Especially when you get the go from your doctor.

Heating pads for lower back and abdomen are no-nos as well.  You could always see a chiropractor.  They are safe all through pregnancy.

  • The same thing happened to me last week. Can't come back until after 12 weeks. Apparently there are a bunch of pressure points that induce labor, especially in your feet and ankles.
  • I also heard no massages in first tri.  make sure if you go in 2nd/3rd that the therapist has special training in pregnancy massage also.  There are specific pressure points they are supposed to avoid, and certain positions they are supposed to put you in (not flat on your tummy like normal).  I had a couple with my first in late 2nd/3rd tri and they were well worth the wait!

This. Also, if you get a pedicure, you should tell the person so they don't hit those spots.
