For those that delivered at OSU Medical Center

edited July 2021 in Ohio Babies
How was your stay? We moved to the area shortly after I got pregnant and this is where we are delivering. Just curious what to expect. :)

Re: For those that delivered at OSU Medical Center

  • I had DD there over 4 years ago and am having this baby at St. Ann's. I was terribly unimpressed with the care there. Granted, my experience was a little different, as my daughter was extremely premature, but I've had some other friends deliver there as well who had similar experiences--nursing staff not seeming to care too much, etc. A friend of mine who is in her residency and graduated from OSU med school said OSU was often the last choice of residents.

This is only anecdotal evidence, so take it as you will. If you have a choice, I'd suggest Riverside or Mount Carmel (if you want to try natural birth, I suggest St. Ann's).

  • Hmm..that's kind of what I was worried about. I was planning to go as intervention free as possible this time. With my first DD the hospital kept pushing and pushing pitocin and when I caved and took it the pain was *awful*. Up until they started the pitocin drip I was doing great. Unfortunately I don't have much of a choice as my husband works for OSU and they will only cover me to deliver at the medical center. I've heard great things about riverside as well and *really* wish I could deliver there instead.

  • Yeah, we had that problem with DD too--I was a student so had to go there. Make sure you talk to your doctor and get a good nurse. If the nurse you get doesn't seem supportive, ask the charge nurse to give you a different one.

  • I had a completely different experiences as PP. I had both of my boys there, and LOVED it. I ended up with a C-section with my first because I did not dilate past 5cm. They were very caring, and eager to help me with anything I needed during that difficult time. When I was in recovery, the doctor even came to my recovery room to talk to me and keep me company, and asked if there was anything I needed. That made me feel at ease.

I decided to have my 2nd C-section there with baby boy #2 and had a great experience as well. I will say that I work at another local hospital (I wont name which one) and I like OSU maternity center a lot better. The doctors and nurses at OSU specialize in those areas so you won't have just any nurse on the maternity floor. (I know this because my friend is a nurse, and she couldn't get a job there right after graduating). The nurse I had said she had worked there for over 20 years and she was so nice and helpful. Oh and the food was awesome too because I never wanted to eat much of anything, so my husband always cleaned my plate.

Hope that helps ! You made a great choice !

  • I had DS #1(first baby) there and my stay was amazing the nurses and Doctor's were amazing there are of course nurses and Doctors who have bad days but I didn't get that vibe from any of the people who helped me.. So overall I loved it they didn't rush my delivery either.. Now I had DD at Grant only because my water broke when I was out and about and it was the closest hospital(Never Again I will deliver at home before I do that one again).. It was terrible.. They not only rushed DD but they were very rude to me almost the entire time.. It took them so long to give me my epidural by the time I got it my daughter was on her way out so I practically had her natural.. As Far As this pregnancy I definitely plan on having him at OSU.. They are amazing and they're really good with high risk pregnancies...

  • I had both of my children at OSU and I absolutely loved it there. The hospital staff, nurses, and doctors were amazing. I wouldn't deliver anywhere else.

  • I delivered at OSU back in May and have absolutely no complaints.  My Dr, all nurses, and staff were very helpful and great!!  I had to have a c-section because my son was breech.  I felt like we both got great care there.

  • I unfortunately had to deliver at OSU because of health insurance reasons similar to yours. I had an absolutely wonderful experience with both childrent with labor and delivery.

Postpartum, on the other hand, was a nightmare. The rooms are tiny. The bathrooms are small and dirty, I wanted to shower so badly, but the showers there were filthier than my college dorm showers. The food was ok, but the menu was the same every day- luckily there is a Wendy's within the hospital and a food court in the Safe Auto garage. Both times, I had a room that was an interior room that faced the Atrium, the surgery and ICU waiting area, so no window to the outside and I could hear them paging family members in the waiting room all day long. They were doing construction during the time when I delivered DD#2 and I could hear construction noise next door. Hopefully, they are renovating the bathrooms! DD#2 had a severe reaction to the Pampers diapers they use, and they didn;t have any other brands available. My DH had to run to Target to get Huggies.

Bonnie the LC is amazing. I had a great experience with her both times. Nursing staff was alright- better the second time around than the first.

When I had both DD's, they asked me right away in the triage area if I had a birth plan, so they accomodate birth plans if you are wanting a med free birth.

    Good Luck

  • My delivery was a scheduled c/s almost 2 years ago.  The nurses were mostly pretty nice.  Some more than others, but I think that is always going to be the case.   I had a horrible spinal headache and puked every time I sat up.  They were so sweet to me even though I know I was a pain in the rear.  The lactation consultant was great too.  She was very friendly and patient with me.
  • I am delivering at Riverside Methodist Hospital... I am somewhat biased towards OhioHealth since I work there, in the IT department. I think if I went to OSU I would never hear the end of it. :)

     Good luck with your birth!

  • I just had my son there back in March and I was definitely pleased with my care. I was admitted at 34 weeks with pre-e and induced at 35. I received nothing but top notch care and all the staff from cleaning services, to nutrition to the ruses and doctors were excellent. They were all pretty understanding of my emotional situation I had going on. The nurses would even bring my hubby food and drink which I thought was pretty amazing. Now, it's not the Hilton and could definitely use some updates but my medical care was phenom which balanced out for the needed renovation. My sty ended up being a total of 8 days and I'd go back. They gave me whatever wanted whenever I wanted it...one night I wanted a cheese pizza at 1am and ure enough the nurse brought it to me.
