VBAC

Intro, hoping for a VBAC

Good evening, I have been lurking on and off for a bit and decided to post a bit tonight so I figured I would introduce myself.  My DS will be a year old in a week and my husband and I have begun discussing number 2.  Here is the brief story of what happened with the delivery of our son, Alex:

At 34 weeks it was discovered that he was frank breech (which explained my killer rib pain due to his head being shoved up under my rib cage!) I tried many crazy things to get him to flip and when all failed we scheduled a version at 37 weeks to flip him.  I opted for no pain meds during the version though I had been experiencing a burning and tightening sensation the entire day prior.  They monitored me for an hour before attempting the version during which time I was having pretty regular contractions that were getting more intense.  They opted to try to flip him after giving me two bags of fluids which helped slow the contractions a bit.  Little guy's butt was so jammed into my pelvis that they couldn't get him to budge an inch and determined that his butt had engaged my cervix and that I was in fact in labor.  When I came in I was at 1 cm and at this point I was at 4cm which was over the course of about five hours in total.  At that point the fluids hadn't help slow anything down and while being monitored Alex "stepped" on his own cord twice causing his heart rate to drop to 60 twice which was very scary.  We were left with no choice but to have a c-section.

I know it was for the best and I lucked out by having a very easy recovery however I've always felt like I missed out on the full experience of going into labor and rushing to the hospital and actually pushing our baby out.  I'm hoping very much so for a natural med-free VBAC the second time around.  We've just begun talking about number two now that I'm a year out.

I'm looking forward to learning from and participating in this board!

Re: Intro, hoping for a VBAC

  • Also meant to mention that since it wasn't technically emergent my surgeon made a great clean low horizontal incision and took extra time using special stitching to close me up knowing that I'm young and plan on having another kid and the fact that I had been committed my entire pregnancy to trying for a natural delivery.   She would be my doctor again with number two which is great because she knows my level of commitment and is committed to the same goal as long as it is healthy for my baby and myself.
