If you have your LO already - have you noticed eye goo?

Has anyone witnessed a "goo" coming out of an eye? Our LO started oozing white goo that comes out white but dries yellow in one of her eyes. The white of her eye is fine, no redness/pink - and she doesn't seem to be bothered by it. She's not rubbing it or even aware that it's oozing. I called the hospital to ask the nurses (I love that they have a "call anytime" policy!) and they said it was normal. Has anyone else's LO had this and is it normal? I guess I just need a 2nd opinion before I believe the nurses haha!

  • It's totally normal.  I remember DD having this too and it's just par for the course!  It will clear up, no worries Mama.

  • My LO has the eye "goo" too!  I was told not to worry about it.  We just get a wet cotton ball and wipe it out periodically.  It doesn't seem to bother anyone (except me... who worries about everything).

  • DD#1 had that, I was told it was a clogged tear duct and normal and to wipe with a warm wash cloth

  • Yup that is a clogged tear duct, VERY common.  Wipe down and away from the eye with a warm wash cloth it should help it.

  • My daughter had this for almost 10 weeks after she was born.  The explanation I remember is that when newborns are born, their tear ducts are still covered by some membrane, but that opens soon after birth.  When it doesn't open, you get the goo.  It normally clears up and opens on it's own, but if it lasts a while there is a procedure that can be performed.  I never got around to doing the procedure, but it did eventually go away.
  • Completely normal. My first had it. I know this sounds strange but you can put a tiny bit of breast milk on it and it should clear it up.

  • My first daughter had it also, for 3 months!! She was born in September and she still has a squinty, goopy eye in out Christmas pictures :( Fortunately it does go away eventually.

  • Thanks everyone! We tried wiping it with a warm cotton ball and it seems better than it was. Still gross, but hopefully clears up soon :-) I never realized how much of a worrier DH and I would become once she arrived!

  • DS had this-totally normal. I asked at my 1 week check up, and he said it had to do with the tear ducts starting to work. You can wipe it with a warm wet cloth and kind of massage towards the inside corner of the eye to help clean it out.
