February 2012 Moms

my milk is now officially "in". does this mean------?

we are almost 4 days old.....

babygirl was eating for 25-45 mins at a time before the milk came in. this time, and the feeding 2 hours before this, she only ate for 10mins before she milk-coma'd out.

when she was eating 25-45 mins..she would fall asleep every 30 seconds (i was told this was normal), but i would nudge her and she'd continue. now she's done-done after 10 mins.

normal?

thanks Smile

  • I heard in my LC class that some babies get comfy and fall asleep.

I have heard undressing them wakes them up a bit.   A GF of mine would have to put a cold wash cloth on her baby so that she would pay attention and eat.  Do you have an LC you can call and bounce your issue off of?

  • My LO is not here yet, but my sister feeds her LO until she falls asleep, usually about 10 minutes into eatting, then changes her diaper.

the diaper change always wakes her up, then she continues feeding her. Baby gets a nice clean diaper and she usually falls right back to sleep during 2nd round of feeding after about 15-25 minutes.

    this might help.

  • I had to start giving Seth only 20 minutes per breast, and constantly agitating him. My true milk has not come in yet, but it is just right there on the doorstep. Wonder if that means we will be good at 10 minutes too? He has started to be satisfied with what I am giving him. I am so happy because my colostrum dried up for a day and I almost lost it.

  • I don't think 10 mins is enough time.  I change the diaper and the switch sides til she finishes.

  • I agree with doing a diaper change between sides.  This helps wake up my little girl.  I have also tried undressing her down to her diaper and that seems to help too.  FWIW.... I have some feedings where she is done in about 10 minutes or so and others where she can eat for 45 minutes to an hour.  She's definitely gaining plenty of weight, so I'm not worried at all.  I'd check with a LC if you are concerned- but definitely try the diaper change in between.  That has really helped us out!

  • thanks ladies. my LC is off today and tomorrow (holiday), i've been supplementing her right after feedings with pumped milk, so hopefully that is enough for now. i will try the diaper change in between the 10 mins, though, and see if she latches to the other side, too. (she hates latching, but once she's on, we're good).

  • My LO ate for much longer before my milk came in too. Sometimes now he is done in 12 minutes total and sometimes he will eat for 30 minutes. Pedi said 10-15 minutes per side is good. If he doesn't eat a lot I feed him his next meal a little earlier (like 2.5hrs instead of 3.5) or whenever he acts hungry again.
  • I think it depends on how much milk you have and how quickly it comes out. Everyone is different. After my milk came in, I went back in for my 3rd LC (we were having nursing issues) and after a weighted feeding, my LO got 2 ozs after 15 mins on one side. So, 10 mins could be enough depending on how awesomely loaded your boobies are :)

this is reassuring. i just fed her again, and i tried the switch after she fell asleep.. changed her diaper, and tried the other side...she refused (she accepted 2 hours ago, but for only 3 minutes).

i then pumped-- i got 75mL on one side, and 53mL on the side she fed on (my container was only 75mL, i need to switch to bigger containers). but this means the difference is 22 mL....and according to what i've been finding online, her stomach is between 22-27mL between 3 and 5 days (we're 4.5 days old now).

i had very big boobies pre pregnancy, bigger boobies during pregnancy, and now boobies that are so big i don't know what to do with them. the amount that i pumped took only about 10 minutes.

***the bolded is what i'm wondering if it's enough food for baby....i didn't supplement her this time and last. she doesn't *ever* show signs of hunger, but wakes up like clockwork every 2 hours, so that's when i feed her.

  • Anything and everything is normal.  I know that sounds smart-assey but it's not.... it just varies so much.

Have you been feeding her with her clothes off? That helps them stay awake longer to eat.

If she's not showing signs of hunger, and she's waking up every 2 hours, you're doing great. Keep it up, mama.
