FTM question about nursing

Sometimes, other BFing moms talk about the convenience of BF bc they can, in essence, nurse without fully waking at night and put LO back to sleep (bassinet or co-sleeper). I've found that every time LO wakes to eat, I also change his diaper. This wakes both of us up completely, and often anyone else in the house as the crying can get really loud. Do others nurse without changing diapers overnight? Doesn't this risk diaper rash?

Thanks!

Re: FTM question about nursing

  • When DS wakes to eat we change his diaper, nurse then burp. He usually gets sleepy while eating & falls asleep while burping. Personally I would not be comfortable skipping overnight diaper changes.

  • Definitely wouldn't skip the diaper change. We change, feed, burp. It does keep us both up for about an hour at a time.

  • With DD1 I always changed diapers between sides, and she would almost always pee everywhere the moment I removed the diaper. After about 2 months I stopped changing her unless i smelled poop because when they STTN you're not waking to change them, so I figured at that point it was okay. If you worry about diaper rash then before bed just put some butt paste on them. My 2yo sleeps from 8pm-7am and I dont use any diaper cream and shes got a very full diaper with pee but no rash.

  • Since she's not pooping as much now, I only change her if she has a poopy diaper.  Like pp said, when the sttn the sleep in a wet diaper.  If you're overly concerned, put a bit of diaper rash cream on as a preventative.

  • I always change him before a feeding.  If I don't, he'll be too squirmy and uncomfortable to finish feeding.  Then again, we use cloth, so I imagine having wet cotton against the skin isn't the most comfortable.  Depending on the diaper, I'd imagine an overnight disposable could probably wick the moisture away enough where you could get away with not changing LO until morning.  That probably depends on the LO and their tolerance for staying in a wet diaper.

  • I only change at night if she poops, which she usually doesn't. Her diaper isn't super full of pee in the morning and she's never had a rash or irritation.

this. but sometimes he has a really big poop after we start feeding (after i have already changed him) so i just change him again before he takes the second breast. it wakes him up a little more to finish eating and i know he's all clean to go back to sleep <3 (my son is 8 days old)

  • I only change poopy diapers overnight. I put vaseline or aquaphor on and he's never had a rash.  My toddler sleeps through the night and he doesn't get rashes either.
  • I was going to say I change, feed, then burp and he stays mostly asleep through it all. However reading all the responses I think I'm going to start changing only if he smells like poop before I feed.

  • i have friends who only change poopy diapers  at night.... but dd poops multiple times per feeding usually, so that doesnt work for us right now. maybe as she gets a bit older tho.

  • we change, feed, burp and my LO has NO tolerance for a wet diaper. He wont eat if he's wet. ironically poop doesn't bother him much
