Hey ladies. I'm a teacher. Due on March 11th (Sunday)....my last day is supposed to be March 9th. Now it all depends on my little one when if I stop sooner than that, but I'm starting to get more nervous about commuting so far to work (40 miles one way) being that close to the due date. I'm wondering if I should go ahead and suck it up and stop working a couple days sooner, or a week. Money is sort of an issue here, but I'm also really worried about driving so far and my water breaking in the car. Any thoughts? How close to your due date are you going to stop working?

I think that may be what I'm going to have to do. If I turn in my FMLA paperwork with my due date, then I will still get paid for the week of spring break. If I turn it in with an earlier date, then I won't. So, I might need to do just that, play it by ear, and if I have to call in sick, then I need to be ready to do that.
I'm working till I go into labor. But I work a block from one of the two hospitals I can deliver at and less than 2 miles from the hospital where I pre-registered. And since I live only 5 miles from both hospitals it doesn't matter as much when I stop working.
How far from your hospital is your job? That would be a bigger concern for me than my water breaking while I was in the car. Because even if your water breaks it's not like your baby is going to be born in five minutes. But if your job puts you pretty far from your hospital that would be something to consider.
Also a lot of FTMs go past their EDD by at least a few days so working till the 9th should be ok.

If I didn't have 10 classes a day each full of elementary kiddos, I could probably do it. But I'm hanging by a thin thread as it is.
The hospital is actually by my house. So if I pop at school then I have to get to the hospital about 40 miles away. Geez!
I am working til the day I go into labor (unless it is a weekend). I work 10 miles from home and the hospital is 20 miles from home. If I go into labor at work, I plan on driving home. Waiting for my husband to get home from work and then driving to the hospital. I have heard that early labor can last quite awhile so I have no concerns.
Plus, I don't want to waste any paid days on just sitting around waiting. And I want to be a resource to those I am training to take over my duties while I'm out. But! I have a desk job... I am not a teacher.
My hospital is 45 miles from my house. I plan on working until my due date even though at times I have to do transports and home visits up to 2 hours away and 3 hours from my hospital. I am not too worried about it since everyone promises me I will have more then enough time to get to the hospital. I am more worried about being uncomfortable, and exhausted while working with screaming teenagers.
I had planned to just keep trucking along without a set date. I have a pretty physical job and over the last couple weeks, it's beginning to take a toll on my body. I had issues with preterm labor (33w twins) and I've been having contraction issues this time around as well. Needless to say, I have a dr apt this Tuesday and I may stop working by the end of next week.
I should also add, this is my third pregnancy and I've never gone further then 38w.
Same here!

This. Exactly. It's weird. We have the same EDD and I am also measuring 37 weeks. I figured working up as long as I can would be best for financial reasons. I am working on making plans for every scenario when I go into labor. I just want to spend as much time at home with baby as possible.
I'm getting done 3 weeks before my EDD. I travel about 38 miles to work. My hospital is about 10 miles from my house but in the opposite direction from work. I have a high likelihood to go early. I'm not chancing it.
I am also staying home after baby so I don't have to worry about leave time or anything. I may even get done a week earlier. I'm a sub and while the sub coordinator is being easy on me and only calling me 2-3 times a week, I'm just plain getting worn out. I never know what grade I'll have between PreK-6th or what school it will be. Some are easier than others. Recess duty about kills me right now.

I honestly wouldn't worry too much about it. Many people go past their due date and not that many have their water break as the first sign of labor. In most cases, you would have plenty of time to get to the hospital even if you work an hour away.
I'm a teacher, too, so I hear you about the money issue. I had planned on working up until I had the baby even if it was past my due date, but I have decided that my last day will be the day before my due date. Since my due date is March 1st, my last day of work will be February 29th unless she decides to come before then.
This. I commute 60 miles each way but don't want one day wasted alone when it could be with my little guy.
I'm working until my Dr. tells me I can't. At this point I've had no indication I will go early, so I'm settled into the routine for the next 1.5 weeks. FWIW I work 30+ miles (one way) away from home/husband/hospital.
Has the Dr. given you any indication that you might go early? Are you being induced shortly after your due date if you don't give birth prior to your due date?
Remember the time off would eat into any paid time off you have stocked up and depending on how your work tracks it might cut into your FMLA (12 weeks) leave...

LO Born early March 2012 We are so blessed
My last day of work is 12 days before my EDD and I am sooooo excited to have that time to myself. This does not affect my pay or how much time I get after the baby arrives.
Only you can make this decision, because every situation is unique. If you do not feel comfortable working until then, then don't. Good Luck!
My last day was Friday. I am not getting any maternity leave and don't plan on going back to work at all once LO is here. I decided to leave about 2.5 weeks before my due date so I could focus on getting any last minute things done around the house and having some time to myself before she arrives.
I'm so worn out I don't know if I will be capable of working up to my due date. Regardless of the commute. Morning duty, standing outside for 25 minutes is already killing me. Plus I have to transition elementary kiddos between classes. I have my helper students, but not so much with the elementary and 1st graders.
I'm having serious doubts that I can do it up till my due date. I'm running on fumes, because now I can't sleep because of contractions and I can't breathe.
Well I think I keep my FMLA date as my due date, and if needed call in sick if I have to before the date. No indication yet if I will be induced yet. Although, my last 2 appointments he said baby was getting on the bigger side. But he wasn't worried about it till 39 weeks. I'm not taking 12 weeks leave...because we can't afford for me to be off that long. If I do, I won't get paid during summer vacation. I am planning on going back to work after 6 weeks leave unfortunately.
I'm also a teacher and am due March 23. At this point, my last day is going to be March 16. My principal and our HR director know that obviously there's a possibility of LO coming early and therefore I'd need to be out earlier, but I want to save my leave for after he's born.
I'm more concerned about having the energy to continue teaching at 38 weeks than going into labor at work lol! I only work about 20 minutes from my house so if I were to go into early labor at work, I could either drive home (if it's very early labor) or have someone drive me home and then DH would meet me at home and take me to the hospital.
I travel very far too over a bridge to get to work and this past Friday was my last day already. I'm due 3/4
I was afraid something would happen or I would get stuck across the bridge and not make it in time before I go into labor. I'm very happy and thankful for this time. I've been very tired and exhausted everyday. Money was also an issue with me because I am off on unpaid leave. I work for a very small family business and they just wished me good luck lol. Take some time off you will be happy you did.
Yeah I think I'm leaning toward taking off the week before. I think it will put my mind...and body at ease before the big day. Now I just need to work everything out before then.
Like Salt I'll be working until I go into labor. I commute via public transportation and walk a mile round trip from the train every day. I have been having BH and irregular contractions for a bit now but I am not giving up one minute with my son because of my discomfort. I can't even remember the last time I had a full night's rest (we also have a very active 3 year old DD). I guess I am just selfish about wanting more time with him (I am only taking 9 weeks) and I am focusing on that rather than worrying about being a little sleep deprived and uncomfortable. *shrug* It isn't easy.
My husband works at least 30 minutes away from me on any given day (sometimes further), I figure if it's necessary I'll call 911 and I'll get to the hospital. For all intents and purposes though I'll have some lead time before anything happens and if my water breaks at work, well that would be the worst thing that could happen I guess. I'll be honest, not worried I am going to give birth on the floor of my cubicle. LOL.
