Babies: 3 - 6 Months

WTF happened to sleep??

My LO was napping great and sleeping semi-decent at bedtime and all the sudden its gone straight to hell.  He never napped very well any where but home and this week I get told he's had 2 hour naps, 2 times a day almost every day.  Today I can't keep him down past the 45min intruder.  Night time has become a nightmare.  He goes to bed around 8:30p and has been getting up 3 times minimum to eat.  His bottles during the day are horrid, one day he took a total of 10oz in 8 hours.  I work full time, no choice, and he's kept by grandmothers with an occasional day with my aunt.

Our biggest change was unswaddling cold turkey because he started rolling over and was trying to roll swaddled and getting seriously mad in his sleep. At first he did ok, he would roll onto his belly at night and sleep getting up his normal 1-2 times.  Now he's waking himself up every hour to hour and half.  I really don't want to do CIO and my husband would probably get him anyway if I did.  I just don't get why all the sudden its so bad.

He's had 2 - 45min naps since he got up at 7:30a this morning and he's so tired he can't stand himself.  Right now he's rolling on a blanket in the living room floor fussing and getting mad.  I'm at a loss as to how to help him today.

  • We need to stop the swaddling soon too and your post is exactly the reason I am dreading it and have not tried it yet. I did CIO with DS1 and I suppose I am going to have to do it with DS2 but Im not ready. I hope it gets better for you all soon!

  • I can totally relate.  DS has hardly napped today and I'm afraid of how he'll be with bed tonight and I am exhausted.

  • I took a nap when my DH got home and he said he not only took 1 hour nap but re had been refusing to eat very much today too. I forgot to add that he got up 3 times hungry last night, well 2, 11pm and 2am then took another bottle at 6am.  He's so sleepy he's pitiful, he can't hold his head up.  As I type this I feel horrible because he's laying in his crib fussing & it just became a full cry.  I have no idea what to do because even holding him doesn't make him happy.  As long as I rock him he will sleep but I can't do that all night.  I have resorted to bed sharing a couple of times from 4am to 6am just so I can get some sleep at night before work.

  • I dont know if its the 4 month sleep regression- just a little late for u...and for i both. My daughter has slept thru the night since a month old....and this past 3-4 days has been crazy . She will fall asleep then wake up every hour or two... its so tiring! I really hope she'll go back to her old...relaxed ways!! Good luck:)

  • Yes, I have put him straight onto his belly.  If I lay him on our bed, he goes straight to sleep and stays out for hours.  We have a pillow top and while I know its not safe for a baby to sleep on a soft surface, I'm always right there.  Pus like I said above, I've caved to co-sleep just to survive and he will sleep soundly when I do.  I don't have to be touching him, literally lay him down. He squirms then is out.

I'm not sure what's going on, earlier once he got to a full cry after about 30 min of whining and fussing I caved and got him out.  I can't stand to hear him cry like that, that's why I really don't think we could do a full CIO.

We just finished our bath & bedtime routine.  As I was zipping him into his sleep sack he was fussing and trying to turn over.  I sat in his rocker for a few minutes & laid him down awake but drowsy, which I used to be able to do for naps very well. Anyway, I laid him on his back, he turned his head to the side & was out, probably the fastest ever.  I also tried the heating pad in his bed on high to warm it before I laid him down. At this point I'm willing to try almost anything.

Thank you all for your sympathy & advice.  Please keep it coming.  I also just pre-made 2 bottles for tonight, both are right a 3 oz. I'm going to try reducing his nighttime amount in hopes that he ups his daytime amount.  I used to have an awesome nighttime sleeper. At 6 weeks to 3.5 months he would only get up once around 3:30am, then up for the day at 7am, since 3.5 months his nighttime sleeps has progressively gotten worse.

  • Yes, the unswaddling is likely playing a factor, but how about teething?  Any action the gum lines?  DD just finished cutting her first two teeth and now that is done, she is sleeping a million times better!  Could also be a growth spurt if he is eating a lot overnight.  Other times it is related to developmental changes they are experiencing (learning a new task) as that does disrupt their sleep as their brains are processing so much.

  • He's teething some, but not to the point its been bothering him lately.  He doesn't have any teeth yet.  I can see some bulges along the gum line on the sides but nothing on top.  I think the biggest problem is the new rolling from back to belly, he's awesome at that but belly to back still gives him trouble.

I know we something of a spurt earlier in the week, I couldn't fill him up, lol.

Last night was so much better.  He still got up at 12 midnight & 4:30 to eat but I only gave him 3oz and put him right back down after, now extra cuddles or rocking, that may have been part of my mistake but it had never bothered him before.  The only time he was waking other than those 2 was around 6:30am and that's habit, because we get him up for the day, I was able to go in a pick him up and soothe back to sleep until 7:30 when he guzzled 7oz in no time flat, then slept until 9am.  He's back down now and is approaching an hour.  I had to go in at the 45 min intruder mark and give him his paci & pat his back and he went back to sleep.   I also decided to put him in his sleep sack for his naps too, which is new for naps.
