way behind on foods?

after reading mason&mama's post about finger food, i'm wondering if i'm really behind on all these good foods to give to lo. i'm still doing purees. ds had a teething biscuit the other day and gnawed off a piece and gagged.

this has made me scared to give him anything else 'chunky.' some of his purees are a little chunkier like peas. and he does okay with them.

are you mamas just more brave than i am and went for it? how did you introduce the finger food?

Re: way behind on foods?

  • I have given DD puffs and yogurt melts. This past week she was doing really good with them and no gagging. This week I am going to try a few more finger foods. I was planning on trying some pasta and some steamed veggies.

  • Gabe just has his raking grasp, not a pincher grasp.  So, he only eats big things.  I put smaller things in his mouth.  He does fine with them, but solids are not something that I really care all that much about.  We offer him things we are eating.  He can eat them, or not.

Foods for fun until 1.  As long as you are offering foods, giving a variety, and giving bm/formula as the main source of food, then you are fine.  You'll know when your LO is ready for more.

  • We're still doing purees too. We've tried mum mums and puffs and he gagged on them. I'm scared to death of choking. We will try some more textures within the next few weeks.
  • Just purees here too. I just asked our Dr this past week about giving finger foods etc because I've seen so much talk about them on here but he said they don't suggest them until 9 months and to keep him on purees for at least another month and then we can play around a bit with the finger foods at 8 months if we want. We don't have the pincer technique down either yet and are still raking so I don't think he would do well with the puffs or melts yet anyway. It sounds like it's all personal preference and how you think your LO will react to them.

  • Gagging is normal, it's not choking. A babies gag reflex is much farther forward on the tounge then ours, so they gag very easily. At this age it's starts to move back so it will get better.

We've never given dd purees, she's been on finger foods right from the start. We're doing Baby Led Weaning. Check out their site for info and recipes!

  • We're right there with you. I gave DD some banana (non-mushed) last week and she gagged so hard she threw up the milk she had an hour earlier so we're back to purees. We'll get there eventually.
  • Just starting pureed food over here.

I agree with this. My LO still gets a lot of purees. I give her chunk stuff while I'm feeding her so she quits trying to play with the spoon or when I'm working on stuff in the kitchen so she has something to do. She throws most of it around anyways.

Somedays she gags on it all, the next she's fine. One day she can't get enough pureses the next three she's done with it.

I don't do the same thing all the time, push anything or make sure she eats. She does what she does and I leave it at that.

I'm more about the playtime it provides and trying new stuff...it's important to me she likes most things.

  • H discovered why we say "food for fun" last night. I give you...first taste of peas

  • As I wrote in my post, formula is his #1 source of nutrition, and purees are #2. He had tried a lot of finger foods because he loves them, because he does well with them, and because we got the ok from the pedi. He usually only gets these once a day for fun. I definitely know that finger foods are not necessary at this age. He still takes in his 28-32oz formula.

  • As far as solids go, purees are pretty much it here.  I've given her a few puffs in the last week and she didn't seem to care one way or the other if she had them.  I give her a few on her tray to practice pinching them but she hasn't mastered putting them in her mouth yet.

  • I'm not starting finger foods until closer 10 months or at least when she's in the crawling stage. For me, I don't see a reason to start any earlier.
  • We're still doing purees...she didn't even start getting solids until 3 or 4 weeks ago. I've given her puffs, but I have to put them in her mouth. She slaps them with her palm, but hasn't figured out how to pick them up yet. I gave her tiny little pieces of cucumber from my salad today, but that was only b/c she was trying to claw at it...I was so nervous about choking the whole time.
  • We're doing purees, but the truth is I haven't ever tried finger foods. I don't see any reason to rush with this. We are slowly working our way through purees. This morning I gave DS his 4th veggie to try. I introduce either once a week or even once every 2 weeks. I once tried mashed avocado and he did not like the texture since he was so used to purees. At this age, don't feel pressured to start finger foods if you aren't ready. It's not really until 8-9 months that they develop pincer grasp and are more ready for that type of food. I say take it slow and do what you feel comfortable with. Also, a lot of babies that are already on the more textured foods started solids at 4 months, so they had more time to get used to it. I don't know when you introduced solids, but we waited until 6 months, so that means we are behind on the curve compared to those who started earlier.

My pedi really wanted me to start solids at 4 months. I waited closer to 5 months. So yes, he has been on solids for close to 2 months now. He has tried just about all the stage 1 and 2 fruits and veggies, as well as some homemade purees. I am not trying to rush the finger foods, but I got the go-ahead from the pedi, and I am following LO's lead. I don't feed him any of the finger foods. I place them on his tray usually once a day and let him play/eat. I think that it really depends on the baby. As far as the pincer grasp goes, I think that if finger foods are offered early, they do develop this early. He has just about perfected the pincer grasp, but this is only through the motivation to eat. My little piggy. ;). But seriously, I do not think that there is a right or wrong here. Whatever works for each individual kid.
