DS got his first bottle of formula...

I've been EBFing at home and pumping three times a day at work since DS was born. It can be a big challenge to pump at work because of my job (stuck in court for hours at time, police stopping by my office for search warrants etc. throughout the day, meeting with officers and witnesses at random times). I went strong for 8 months but I think I might be ready to wean DS. My production is going down, I can't seem to keep weight on (I know no one wants to hear me complain about that) and DS is biting like crazy.

We gave him a small bottle of formula yesterday which he refused at first but then sucked down without an issue. I should have been happy but instead I just burst into tears from mommy guilt. Anyone else feeling sad about the prospect of weaning their LO? I know that FF babies are perfectly healthy and I should be proud of myself for making it to 8 months (especially when 5 of them included being back at work in a high stress job!) But feel kind of guilty Sad

Re: DS got his first bottle of formula...

  • The thought of weaning makes me super sad. I planned on a year but will go beyond that because there's no way either of us will be ready to stop in 4 months. I WAH, so it's much easier to BF since I don't have to deal with pumping. So, good for you for going as long as you have. You could always try to continue some nursing (maybe mornings and nights if your supply holds up) if you aren't ready to wean 100%.

This is what I was going to suggest.  I also SAH so it makes it easier, but I do find my supply sometimes drops (especially the last two times I got AF) so I may offer some formula while continuing to nurse as long as I can.  I am sure that I will still do mornings and/or bedtime sessions past 1 year.

  • My supply has dropped quite a bit, and I can no longer keep up with pumping.  DS now gets 1 bottle of formula a day at day care, which I was surprisingly okay with.  I use the sensitive kind for spit-up since he was having issues with that, so I think I convinced myself that he needed it and it was like "medicine", lol.  I usually EBF on the weekend, but I like the freedom of knowing that DH or I can give him a bottle of formula if needed so I don't have to dip into my freezer stash.

I'd suggest starting with 1 formula bottle per day, or do a mixture of formula/BM in LO's bottles.  Any milk you can provide is awesome.  I know it's tough...but you did an amazing job making it this far!

  • Thanks for the support ladies! I think I'll try BFing in the morning and at night if my supply can keep up!
