3rd Trimester

repost from 1st tri..re: sciatica

I had sciatic nerve pain with my DD after week 14...still pretty early according to all the books (most say later on in 2nd or really more like 3rd). this time around I am experiencing it way early-since beginning of week 10! I am in so much pain. it hurts to sit on the floor with DD, hurts really bad to get up from sitting, hurts to walk, etc. I tried massage therapy a couple days ago-honestly think that made it worse. Tried heating pad, tylonal at night, various stretches. I'm just not getting any lasting relief.

Anyone else experience this and what worked for you? I'm considering acupuncture. Thanks!

  • Im a FTM @ 36 weeks and for the past couple days I've had excruciating pain and wasn't sure if it was sciatica or not. I have the same symptoms as you and was actually going to post to see if anyone had some treatment ideas. I tried what you've tried & found walking and stretching increased the pain as well. My husband got me a therapy ball and i actually found sitting on it to help a little. My mom wanted me to call the doctor but I didn't think there is much he could do? I feel your pain (literally) and hopefully some moms have some suggestions :-) good luck and I hope it gets better for you!

  • I was actually put on bedrest due to my sciatica. I found that laying on my right side was the only thing that eased it at all. The pain was on the right as well. From what my doctor said and my reading you are to lay on your right side and it helps ease the pain.

I also did daily bum in the air on hands and knees to try and get the baby to shift. After 8 days of doing this plus rocking I did get baby to shift off my sciatica... and is now breech.

  • Bedrest is the only thing that helped me.  When sitting, a heating pad absolutely helped, but did jack for when I was mobile- and I work retail, so I was always mobile.  I got lucky in that once I hit a certain weight, the pain eased off.  A friend of mine said the same thing happened to her- it only hurt during a certain weight range.

  • my sciatica started at 11weeks.  Around 16 or 20 weeks I started going to a chiropractor 3 days per week...the sciatica never got worse and actually at 26 weeks was significantly improved.  I mean I now only have a rare pain in my A$$ versus the constant sacral pressure with right butt pain that I had before.  I was never a chiro patient before, but I am a believer now!  Also, I had headaches 5 days per week before I started going (must have been pregnancy related because I never had them like that before), and now I haven't had a headache in a month or two.  Find someone experienced in chiro care for pregnancy, and then go REGULARLY.  you won't regret it!  Plus, it will better help position baby for delivery...super important.

  • The only thing that works is seeing my chiropractor once a week. I got sciatic pain very early in this pregnancy as well...

  • Chiropractor is what worked for me too. I only had to do a few appts and then he was able to give me some stretches and other tips to keep under control.

My OB also said that a lot of women have luck with accupressure/accupuncture. This would have been my next step if the chiro hadn't been able to help.

  • Thanks-I am still in pretty bad shape. Made an appt with an OB who also does acupuncture herself. If that doesn't help my next step is a prenatal chiropractor.
