HELP - How do I get him to eat/drink?

C has been sick all week.  His fever finally broke yesterday, but all week we have been struggling with him to get him to eat and now he's refusing fluids.  We have tried bottles, sippees, milk, water, orange juice, Motts totts, milk with banana blended in it, pedialyte, pediasure...he wants nothing to do with any of it.

We've had to squeeze the purreed fruit pouches in to his mouth while holding his arms since Wednesday, and now it's come to that with fluids.  The pediatrician said that we shouldn't worry about solids, but to force the fluids.  In the past 24 hours he's had maybe 12 oz of fluids.  Today he hasn't needed his diaper changed since he woke up this morning..  I'm really concerned.

  • If he hasn't had a wet diaper since this morning, I would call the doctor ASAP. I would definitely be concerned about dehydration. DD had to be put on a IV at one point for dehydration when she was sick.

ETA: It looks like you have tried everything so don't feel like you didn't do the right thing. Sometimes they just won't drink and in that case, they may need an IV to get the necessary fluids.

  • I'd definitely call the pedi's after hours number at this point, and let them know about the lack of diapers.  They will let you know for sure what to do and you won't worry all night!  Hang in there, it is so hard when they are sick!

  • I would also call the doctor and ask them what to do. The last time M was sick and couldn't keep anything down, the pedi told me to call if he didn't have a wet diaper after 6 hours.

  • Ok, I was wrong, I thought DH had said he hadn't changed him at all today, but he has at least once, and it was a mildy wet diaper.  C normally fills up at least 3 diapers a day.  DH thinks we should wait until the morning to call the pedi, but I'm reluctant.  C doesn't have a dry tounge, but when he cries, his voice is really hoarse and he barely has tears.  He has a lot of snot draining out his nose, and he's been drooling a lot, which is why it seems that he's not dehydrated.  But he has had really low energy.  I thought he would bounce back after his fever broke.

  • is he eating anything? if so, I'd push fluid-filled foods like cucumber, watermelon, etc.

If he won't take anything, I would still call a Dr - he has symptoms of dehydration, I wouldn't let him go all night like this.

  • Some ideas--push liquids with a med syringe.

    Give him water-filled fruits

    Ice pops

I'm glad he's peed at least once. I hope he gets better soon. He looked really sad in your picture on fb :-(

  • I would try popsicles, he might find those fun to eat. Also try letting him drink from something different than usual, like a medicine cup for example, that might be more appealing and fun looking to. him right now.

  • How did he do today? Is he feeling any better? Was he able to take down more liquids?

  • Our pedi also said to look inside his mouth (like pull down his lower lip a little and look at the gum line) - if you see spit bubbles then he's still hydrated. If not, then it is time to be more concerned. It can be hard to tell with diapers because they are so absorbent.  HTH!
