Hospital birth with a midwife?

Hey Ladies!  I used to be on the knot but this is my first post here, hopefully people don't ask this all of the time.

I would like to have a midwife but have a delivery at a hospital, I can't get my head around a separate birthing center just yet.

I live in Woodinville and I'm feeling like our choices are limited.  From what I've heard you can't be guarenteed a midwife at Evergreen so we are thinking about NW Hospital Midwives even though it is a bit further (I don't mind a short drive if I'm more comfortable with the care).  Are there other locations/providers that we should consider?  Has anyone used NW Midwives?

 Thanks!

  • I may be COMPLETELY off here, since I'm not at the point of pregnancy yet. But I feel like GroupHealth has that option. Something to check into. Good luck!

  • I think Swedish has midwives, and I've heard good things about Providence midwives.  It might take a couple days, but people will respond!   I don't have personal experience with any as we did use a free standing birth center.  good luck!!

  • Overlake OBGYN has midwives who deliver at Overlake and at Swedish in Issaquah. I delivered my son with them 2 weeks ago (birth story a few posts down). If you have any other questions, let me know!

  • There's also a Swedish midwives group at the Ballard hospital -- that's where I'm going now and have liked all of them so far. There are 6, I believe, and one is always on call so you should be able to meet the midwife who delivers your baby in an appointment ahead of time.

GroupHealth has midwives that deliver at Overlake - not sure about other hospitals.

  • The group I saw included midwives and they deliver at Overlake.

  • Hi there- I just delivered yesterday at Evergreen with a MW.  I was lucky to deliver on a weekday during the day, so that I was able to deliver with a MW.  (They're availble M-F 7am-6pm, Tuesday night/Wednesday early morning, and are on call two weekend days a month). There are two that work at the Center for Women's Health, and they're both great.  I do know that there is a group in the community working hard to get an actual MW program at Evergeen and hopefully they'll be making progress soon.  I know lots of women have LOVED the Puget Sound Birth Center (very close to Evergreen in case of complications), so you might want to check them out as well.  Good luck!

  • I don't have any recs, but I had a successful hospital birth with a midwife. There are maybe one or two things that are mandated at a hosptial that might not be at a birth center, but I felt that I had the best of both worlds. I also had a great supposrt team but if they couldnt have been there i would h e chosen a doula to help backe on my labor and birth preferneces. Do you have the option of a midwife that is outside the hospital as opposed to one associate with it??

  • I did a hospital midwife birth at UWMC, but their midwives are the ones who moved up to NW Hospital.  I was SO very happy with all of my prenatal care and my birth experience with them.  Even though there were a few hospital policies that might not have been in place at a birth center (for example: technically they don't do water births), the midwives said they often found ways to work around those.  I also hired a doula and felt very supported in my birth between her, the midwife, and my husband.

  • Thanks everyone!  I now have an appointment with NW Midwives next week and I plan to look into the options at Overlake.  We don't have Group Health insurance but I might look into that one anyway to see how that works, seems like most people have had great experiences there.
  • A lot of friends and family have delivered at various hospitals in the area with a midwife. :) so it's definitely an option!
