Juice

I feel like giving juice is a controversial topic, lol! But I do have a question - when did you introduce it? I feel like I don't understand what the big deal about juice is. I keep seeing people waiting until 1+ years to introduce it, but it seems like it would be a fantastic way to get more vitamins and nutrients into LO in a different way. Now, I can understand not giving LO store bought sugar laden juice all the time, but I have a juicer and will be making the girls all their juice. I just don't get what the difference between apple puree and apple juice is, if I don't sweeten it and make it myself, you know? Plus they hate their sippies and I thought if I added a little juice, they might like them more?!

Re: Juice

  • Homemade juice is different. I'd do that whenever you want. My only concern with that is you can't always get home squeezed juice while you are away from home- and they can start to prefer juice only in sippies. It is important to me that my kids drink milk and water. If they wouldn't drink those because they prefer some apple juice - well I'd be one mad mama.

  • Oh and they are young still..so I'd keep trying water. They'll get it eventually!
  • When people talk juice, they mean store bought 100% juice at best and more commonly the 100% vitamin c (10% juice). I would say if you are juicing yourself that is totally different. Although you are still looking at a sweeter drink and some kids may only want that instead of water and milk. And does home juicer juice still have the fiber? That is my other understanding - for example 100% apple juice does not equal an apple because you are missing the fiber.
  • When I'm saying juice, I am definitely. It referring to something I made myself. We don't give it because 1- Charlotte is happy with milk and water and I wouldn't want her to start preferring juice instead of one of those and 2- both DH and I struggle with our weight and we'd rather Charlotte eat fruit and veggies to drinking sugar-y juice. Like JNK mentioned, you are missing part of the nutrition by only having the juice.

  • We use it as a treat, so he may get it like once per week.mainly because he would probably beg for it all of the time otherwise.  He loves his milk and water, so we like to keep it that way.  I also let him drink a little more of it when he is sick, just to keep him really hydrated.  I think that we letting him having it when he was about 15 months old or so...

  • If the girls will take the apple puree, just stick with that and keep trying water. Justin was fully into his sippy at 7 mths. At almost 11 months, both twins just shake it upside down or bang it on their tray- they'll all get it eventually. Justin didn't like juice when he was little so we never pushed it. Now he will ONLY drink water. I wish that DH and I followed his good example, haha. Like PPs have said- there is no nutritional advantage to offering juice.

  • Oh and A has just gotten the hang of his sippy with water in the past week or so, and even so, he mainly just chews on it and gets some water :)

  • DS has never had juice(I am talking both freshly squeezed and stuff from the store).  He eats plenty of fruit chopped up or in pureed form(he loves fruit pouches still).  He loves milk and water, and will get juice as a treat when he is older.  DH thinks it is mean. DS has no clue what he is missing.  When our friend's three year old was getting cavities from juice(according to her dentist), that definitely made me want to not introduce juice too early(plus, there isn't any nutritional value, really, to juice).

  • Not on the topic of juice, but have you tried different sippy cups?  Riley just started to really get the hang of her straw cup but she still doesn't get it when I give her a regular sippy that she has to tilt up.  The straw one she uses is made by Playtex and it says 4m+ on the packaging.  You can squeeze the bottom to help them get the hang of the water/juice coming out of the straw.
