Just curious how long does it take you to breastfeed and get your LO back down to sleep when they wake in the night? I'm up for at least an hour and when I tell others this, they think that's crazy. I know it doesn't matter but just wondering....
Maybe 15-20 minutes of actual nursing; DS falls asleep nursing; burb him and stay in that position for probably another 20 minutes (making sure he is good and asleep); then finally transfer him to his RnP where he wiggles and fusses for a minute or two while I shush and rock the RnP. So, 40-50 minutes on a good night if all goes as planned. (and really, he is an unpredictable newborn, so it is all up in the air for change each time).
That's pretty par for the course for us. We have to change him, feed him for half an hour, and pray that's enough for him to doze off. More often than not, he'll get squirmy because he'll have wet his diaper again and need the process started over (on the other breast). If he's having a bad night, we have to go through this 3 or 4 times before he goes to sleep. So that's half an hour if we're lucky, an hour normally, and up to 2 hours if he's really finicky. We have music on during this entire process as well as the lights dimmed. When DH gets home from work (he works nights), he can sometimes get him to sleep without needing to be nursed down, but that's only after DS has had at least 1 or 2 rounds of nursing first.
no more than 30 minutes. i go in, leave lights off (she has a nightlight that stays on) pick her up, feed her and hold her for about 5 minutes after to make sure shes going back to sleep then she goes back in the crib
I think it just depends on the baby. With my first I was up for at least 30 minutes and sometimes a lot longer. With this LO, it is only about 10 minutes.
with my first it took about 45 mins to nurse at a time... which was painful
this one (2 months old) feeds 3 - 5 mins evert 2 hours!!!! i think it depends on how much milk comes out... my let down is super strong this time around. i just started pumping to get him use to a bottle for when i return to work and i had to put him on stage 3 nipple right away
so 40 mins is fine... it all depends how fast your milk is coming out and how much your baby can handle
We were doing about an hour every night - until last night it only took him 30 minutes to wind back down!!!! - As a PP said, we keep the lights off & don't talk to him also.
I have a two week old, so my schedule doesn't exist, but an hour is pretty typical on a good night. He likes to nurse for about 40 mins but we're working on "time management". Last night he was awake from 10pm - 5am. It was rough.
Appreciate the feedback. My daughter is 6 weeks old now and I just have a nightlight in the room as well. I nurse her, burp her, change her, then nurse on other side,.burp again and then try to lay her right down again. Definitely no talking or interaction. Sometimes it works no problem and other times, she is awake and starts fussing and moving around and then it ramps up to cries. So I usually start rocking her again or sometimes try to keep her laying down and just rub her head.
We use cloth diapers during the day, but at night I put her in a disposable so I don't have to do a diaper change when she wakes up for her middle of the night feeding. For us, the diaper change was enough stimulation to really wake her up and she thought it was party time then. Now, we nurse for about ten to twenty minutes and she goes right back down. No talking, no lights on.
With DS, it was a lot longer and a lot more work. Every babe is different. And it changes soooo quickly!

do you think you could drop the diaper change? it may be too much stimulation. Around 4-5 weeks I stopped changing her at night (she doesn't poop at night) and that helped make things go faster all around. And when she's approaching the next size up in diapers (right now she's in 1s, almost 2s), I put her in the bigger size at night. it keeps her comfortable longer
It doesn't take us long at all...my older girls took forever at night, but Bonnie is easy. She usually only nurses on one side for about 15 minutes, then I burp her and we go back to sleep. We bed-share. I don't change her diaper unless she poops, which she normally doesn't do at night.
It all depends on the baby. My older one would take only 15-20 min but woke several times/night. The new baby only wakes once (or usually not at all) but once she's awake that's it. So if she wakes at 4 I just resign myself to being up for the day, because she's got a good 3 hours in her. The minimum I've been able to put her back down in is an hour, but she's a good sleeper so I try not to complain, but it really is different babies with different needs/rhythms.
Mine depends on how LO is feeling. Sometimes when I wake him up, he's ready to party and we can't go back to sleep for hours. Sometimes he falls asleep after 10 minutes of nursing.
...Last night he was a total rockstar. Drank too much, vomitted all over me and my hair, peed on me when I tried to comfort him, and stayed awake for 3 hours until I gave up and gave him a pacifier to soothe him- since I obviously was not doing the trick.
