Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Diaper Rash + Sesitive Skin

DS has very sensitive skin and has a diaper rash that I can not get rid of. We have been to the pedi and all he tells me is to try different creams. The creams we have tried make his rash and the skin around it more red and irritated. If anyone has any suggestions... I feel so bad for the little guy! We have tried triple paste, desitin, penaten, Lotrimin AF, Butt Paste, Monkey But and a prescription Silver Sulfiazine.

TIA

Re: Diaper Rash + Sesitive Skin

  • Did the pedi say it wasn't a yeast diaper rash? Those rashes are awful to get rid of!

I give my DS an oatmeal bath when get a diaper rash. It takes some of the redness out of it and promotes healing. If you have a coffee grinder just grind up some oatmeal to a fine powder and add some to a warm bath. It's a pain to clean up, but it's lovely for the skin!

    Good luck!

  • My DD has TERRIBLE diaper rashes for a long time. We were cloth diapering and used disposable wipes. We tried every cream out there, too.

We now use cloth diapers during the day and earth's best brand disposables at night. Her bum couldn't handle the extended time in CDs. Also, we now use cloth wipes with only water. We NEVER use any kind of store bought wipes. She hasn't had a diaper rash since we switched 3 months ago!

  • I use a mix of regular strength Maalox, extra strength Desitin, and plain cornstarch on Liam.  It's very soothing and clears up his rashes in no time.

I don't really follow a certain ratio, I just mix a few tablespoons of the Maalox in with the Desitin to thin it out and then add in cornstarch until it becomes paste-like again.

  • DS has had a few bad diaper rashes and very sensitive skin. I put a little of cornstarch in his bath at night for a couple nights, use aveeno diaper rash cream and it's all better. GL!
  • maybe try some baking soda baths in between diapers and be sure he is completly dry before adding any cream  or such.... my DD is the same way with diaper rashes and this is what usually works for us. HTH

  • DD is going through the worst diaper rash she has ever had now, so I peeked in here to see what others were saying. Never heard of the baking soda baths, interesting.

The rash looks like a burn. We've been using a triple antibiotic due to the skin breakdown, desitin, and a+d cream with aloe. The skin is hard to get completely dry to apply ointment due to the weeping, so we've been going to great lengths to let her be naked for several hours at a time. The rash is already looking better but still pretty raw. :( hopefully tomorrow is a better day.

  • What finally ended up working for DS was Bag Balm. We had tried everything else (Burt's Bees, Desitin, Butt Paste, A and D, Aquaphor, Vaseline, etc) and a friend suggested Bag Balm and it finally worked. We buy it at Target, it is behind the pharmacy counter.

  • I just posted some treatment options and explanations for diaper rashes. Sounds like some of you (SoontobeMrsB, I think that's your SN), sounds like you need to add hydrocortisone!

  • Sometimes the chemicals in wipes can cause irritation. WaterWipes are chemical-free wipes that just became available in the US. They might be worth a try.
