Austin Babies

what finger foods to start with?

E has started refusing all her purees, so we've moved to table food with her.  She'll eat anything she can pick up and feed herself.

So - what do I feed her now?  So far we've just been doing puffs, yogurt melts, mum mums, a little shredded cheese, and we tried some carrots/black beans last night.  She started foods at daycare yesterday, which consisted of biscuits for breakfast, chicken, peaches, and mashed potatoes for lunch, and crackers for snack.

Do I just load up on fruits and veggies at the store and make them for her?  We cut the beans in half last night (ok, we bit them in half) because we thought she might choke on them.  If we do pasta, what kind/shape?  The shredded cheese was hard for her to pick up (it was finely shredded) - should I get something different?

purees were SO much easier!!

Re: what finger foods to start with?

  • greenbeans, toast, berries (blue, straw, cherries, etc.), steamed veggies (asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, etc.), scrambled egg yolk, shredded meat, pasta (we found the spiral pasta easiest to pick up)...sweet potato bites/fries, zucchini, squash spears, ....  cheerios, graham crackers....

  • We mostly followed a BLW method, and Camy was eating just about anything that we ate, maybe steamed a bit longer to soften. She LOVED avocado, asparagus, squash/zucchini, broccoli, pasta, cubed cheese, shredded chicken, raspberries or blueberries...

We didn't dice everything up super small, we typically gave her spears/fry shapes that she could pick up and gnaw on. For example, the broccoli, we would just give her a floret and she would hold the stem and chew the tops. Asparagus, we gave her spears, squash/zucc we would cut into fry shapes and steam, etc.

Have fun! I LOVED the early table food eating stage before she got all 2 years old and picky.

  • the posts above have great suggestions... we also do a lot of mandarin oranges, organic whole grain waffles (microwaved and then cut in tiny pieces (which he LOVES) and cheese slices broken into small pieces (less mess than shredded!).

    g/l!

  • We always did rotini pasta because it was easy to cut up and for V to pick up and eat.  We would do rice and stuffing, too, and those were hits.  Any veggies or fruits you have that are soft or can be cooked and made soft should be OK.  V even liked cooked broccoli (just the tree top part, not the stem).  Have you tried scrambled eggs yet?  They are an allergen, so watch her the first couple of times, but they're easy to make and you can mix cheese in with them.
