D.C. Area Babies

Day Care Recs (Arlington/Alexandria area)

Went a few pages back and didn't see this asked recently, so hope I'm not beating a dead horse, but I'm looking for suggestions for DC centers in Arlington/Alexandria (or nearby).  We are, 95% sure, moving to DC this summer and the one thing, above all, that is stressing me out is finding a DC.

1 -- yays/nays of DC's would be appreciated

2 -- tips on where to search for DC's are also appreciated

Thanks!

  • The Arlington Dept. of Human Services maintains lists of licensed centers (they call it "early childhood programs") and in-home daycares in the county on its website.

I didn't read through the linked post, but depending on the age of your child you might have better luck looking for an in-home provider once you figure out just where you'll settle in.  The waiting lists for infant spots in centers are generally year-long ordeals.  At the same time, if you end up in the part of Alexandria outside the beltway, I wouldn't want to suggest you consider daycare in North Arlington unless you work there because that would be a long hike at rush hour.

  • Here's a "how I found daycare" spreadsheet I made. Keep the faith, you will find daycare!

  • As far as yays and nays of this area, my only "nay" is that traffic around here is horrendous.  While you do your daycare search, think about your commute, your daily schedule, what your transportation will be to and from work, who will do drop off and pick up (you or DH), will you carpool, etc.  Finding in-home daycare is a lot easier, so if you are looking for a center and have to get on waiting lists, finding in-home may be an "in the meantime" option.

Other than traffic, (and my only other complaint here is the cost of housing being $$ but that's any major metro area), I really love this area.  Tons of arts and culture, great doctors/hospitals, diverse population, lots of shopping choices - easy to find a bargain, close to Chesapeake Bay/water/boating, I could go on and on.  Plus the job I have (and love) is so specific, this is the only place I can do it.
