3rd Trimester

Had a panic attack last night.

okay... so I wake up from a deep sleep at 5am with the sensation that I have to get out of my house and if I could get out of my body.   I can't explain it - it's never happened to me before but it sucked.  I was thisclose to waking up my DH to have him take me to the ER.

I got out of bed and went into the living room and had to start taking deep breaths to calm down.  Then I watched an episode of Top Chef to try to stop thinking about how weird I felt.  Went back to bed for a few hours but it was bizarre.

Called my doc and she had me come in to do a thyroid test because of it and she gave me a script for xanax (sp?) that I can take if it happens again.

Anyone else deal with a panic attack?  If so, how do you deal?  It's awful!

Re: Had a panic attack last night.

  • I used to get them every now and then and never knew why. Was referred to counseling, which I declined because I always felt like it was a medical issue. When I would get the attacks I would almost feel like I had to fight to stay conscious. Well, when I went in for my first pregnancy appointment they checked my thyroid and it was a tad (but not horribly) low. I was put on a low dose of synthroid and I really have not had a recurrence since!  So, definitely could be your thyroid...

When you get one, I think the really important thing to remember is that the feelings you are feeling won't hurt you. So I always try to tell myself "sure, go ahead and feel funky." Somehow that acceptance usually allows it to pass more quickly. Good luck!!

  • Thanks for responding.  Yeah, I felt weak and weird and like I had to go outside for air and run away.  Like I said, it's the most bizarre feeling.  I've been googling for a bit here and find out that "sleep panic attacks" could be contributed to preparing for a big life changing event (i.e. having a new baby).

Hopefully will get the results of the thyroid test on Monday.  Thanks for your advice.  It's so hard to be in that panic of the attack because you're not sure how long it will last and it's so uncomfortable but I'm now reading that most don't last more than 10 min.

My doc says it's not pregnancy related but...  I had a VERY stressful day yesterday and didn't drink enough water.

    Thanks again!

  • I used to get panic attacks all the time; and eventually went on Cipralex to control them. I got off the meds about 6 months before I got pregnant (unrelated). I've noticed my anxiety coming back, and I'm worried it won't be long until I have a full-fledged panic attack.

The thing to remember is that it will go away - your body can only endure a full-fledge panic attack for something like an hour, so it will pass. I just remind myself of this when its happening.

    Good luck :)

  • Have your vitamin D level checked... I saw on the news that low vitamin D is related to panic attacks/depression... you never know!
