how do you use diaper cream?

I realize it is probably such a silly question, but I have no idea how/when to use diaper cream.

Today at the pediatrician's office they recommended using petroleum jelly or a diaper cream as a preventive measure and a barrier to moisture. We have tons of different creams we got as gifts, but DH and I just realized when we arrived home from the doctor that we have no idea when to use them (once a day, at every change?) or even where to apply the cream. Does it just go on the bum cheeks?

I figured I could google this but am not having much luck as everything just says to "apply liberally to the diapering area." I feel so silly for not knowing this stuff!

Re: how do you use diaper cream?

  • We've only been using it as needed. Early on, DS seemed to have more irritation and we used it more frequently, but especially overnight when changing is less frequent. My mom suggested sunning instead - putting his bum only, the rest of him covered, in sunlight for 10 minutes a day and then moving him to somewhere else for an hour without a diaper to let him "air out". This really healed up any issues really quickly. I try to do this every few days to maintain it.

  • I use a&d at night as a barrier, since she usually sleeps for a long time without a change. Other than that, I like Bordreaux's Butt Paste for treatment of irritation. I don't use anything during the day if she doesn't have a rash.

  • We only use it if we notice she's starting to get red or pink. We've only needed it a handful of times. Just take a good generous amount and slather it on anywhere that looks irritated. Put the diaper on and check on it again at the next diaper change. We usually will reapply at every change if she's starting to get irritated, just so it doesn't become actual diaper rash.

We've also used it on other places besides her tushy area. She rubs raw the skin in between her neck rolls. I applied a little there and it cleared it right up.

  • We don't use it at every change.  I only put some on when I notice any redness or irritation.  She rarely gets irritated (we cloth diaper) so I don't think she really needs it at every change.

  • We use petroleum jelly at every diaper change. I just rub a little bit right onto the back of the diaper where his bum sits, so far it seems to be working great!

  • We use it when there is a diaper rash, which was rare with dd and ds hasn't had one yet.  The only time I used it preventatively on dd was when we went on several hour car rides, because I feel she gets hot in the car seat.  We are still on the same tube of Butt Paste that I bought while pregnant with dd, haha.
