Must have Baby Items (Experienced Moms)

If you had to pick one item for baby that you used the first time around and would recommend as a must for new moms...What would it be?

Re: Must have Baby Items (Experienced Moms)

  • If you are planning on breastfeeding, life was so much easier with the My Brestfriend feeding pillow. I had such a tough time with the Boppy when DD was small. The My Brestfriend was a lifesaver! The boppy was good for when she was a lot bigger... 6-7 months.

Edit** something else I forgot.. a carrier. I love all 3 of my carriers.. Moby and Mei Tai when DD was little. Ergo and Mei Tai when DD got bigger. I still use my Ergo and Mei Tai carriers.

  • A bouncer. They make it easier to be able to do things when you're home alone with baby on maternity leave. I could put Brendan in his whenever i needed to use the bathroom or take a shower, and he would just hang out in there with me in his bouncer. It also helped me since I EPed, so I would feed him a bottle in his bouncer while pumping. This is the bouncer we have:

  • I second a bouncer.  We have the fisherprice rainforest bouncer and I loved being able to move her all over the house as I was doing things like showering.  She loved it and it helped when she had reflux.

My Little Lamb Cradle 'n Swing - life saver!  He napped so much in that, sometimes it was the only thing that would get him to fall asleep.

  • Not everyone is in to baby carrying, but I LOVE my Moby wrap. My son is almost over 20lbs and I still wear him. I definitely planning on using it with the next baby and any other future children.

  • 3rd for the Bouncy here.  DS slept in it on our bedroom floor the first 7 weeks, he would not sleep at night anywhere else (bassinet = fail).  I too would put it on the bathroom floor while I showered.  A lifesaver.

  • DD didn't like the bouncer or swing! I hope the new baby likes both!

  • A baby carrier - DS would sleep for HOURS in it.  We started off with a Moby, moved to an Ergo (for DH) and a Babyhawk Mei Tai (for me), and I still wear DS in a ring-sling once in awhile.

  • DS never liked the bouncer but he lived and slept in his My Little Lamb Swing for the first 7 months and I slept on the couch right next to it.  It was the only place he'd sleep.  We still have that swing, but it was battery powered and there were some nights I'd be standing over it with a screwdriver trying quietly to open the battery door in the dark without making any noise to put new batteries in.  This time around, we'll get a plug in one and use this one as back up in another room.
  • Another vote for a swing.  Ours was actually a combination swing/bouncy chair (bouncy chair lifts right out of the swing frame).  The fist 3 months or so we used the swing a lot.  Then from 4-5 months we used the bouncy chair.  After that, she was so over it.

  • I don't have just one... I can probably limit it to 5 {er, or 8} though.  These are things I absolutely can't/couldn't live without.  {I'll come back and link these, I have to change browsers to do it on my Mac}

    Baby Crack Machine

    Rock N Play

    Boppy

    JJ Cole Diaper Caddy

Baby Jogger City Mini Double Stroller

    Jumperoo

There's more here in this post. I plan to update it soon!

  • Rock N Play. My LO slept in it next to the bed for the first 4 months and if you have to travel at all while they are little it's so easy to take! I loved loved it!
  • Aden and Anais swaddling blankets. They hold baby tight and make it hard to break lose from the swaddle. They did wonders for DD.

  • I can't limit to one thing either.

I have a Babyhawk Mei Tei, like PP, and a HotSling. HotSlings are not one size fits all but good for newborns to do cradle. I couldn't ever hip hold on that, so I got the BH and it is nice because it's one size fits all (or most, at least) and ties up around you and baby, so my H could use that one too (and he did). I kind of want a Moby wrap this time around as well, but I have the other two still that'll be great.

Also nice to have was a swing. DS loved swinging and being worn.

  • I vote for a good carrier, hands down!  I'd skip most of what you can buy in the big box stores (such as the Bjorn and similar) and go straight for a woven wrap, Ergo, or quality mei tai.  With any of those, you can wear from the newborn stage straight through the preschool years.  My DS is just about 3, and I still wear him occasionally.

  • The one thing I buy for winter babies is a zip up blanket that fits into/over the car seat.  Where I live we definately don't need to big fuzzy ones, just a light weight waterproof windproof version.  This is MUCH easier than putting on big jackets and worrying whether the straps are tight enough or running around finding dropped blankets to put over the baby.  Unless I was going to be outside for awhile this was sufficient at keeping baby warm going to and from the car all winter long.

  • A sleepsack! It was such a lifesaver because ds would always kick his blanket off.

  • I loved my My Brest Friend pillow!  I couldn't get DD positioned right with a boppy (ha!  My phone wants to correct "boppy" to "nippy"...how's that for a weird sentence?!).  I also had trouble juggling the boppy and DD.  With the MBF, I could snap it on and have both hands free to pick up and position DD.  Can't recommend it highly enough!

  • Ergo, a plug in swing and Halo swaddle sacks.

  • Carriers didn't work too well for me, I just felt as if ds would smother in one (I had a sling and carrier). Also, I agree with the bouncer. Our bouncer vibrated so ds loved that! It was often the only thing that calmed him when he was super fussy.

I agree with jenni about the Angelcare. I still use the sound monitor part as a regular baby monitor. When ds was young, it was the only way I could get some decent rest without worrying about him.

Also, a video monitor is a necessity in our house! Dh bought one that tells the temperature of the room, plays music, and you can talk into it. We turn that on every night, along with the Angelcare. I only turn the video monitor on in my room to check on lo if I hear him crying through the Angelcare monitor...if that makes sense.

This my DH and I used to call them our baby sacks lol DD would not stay under a blanket or stay swaddled. She wiggled too much. These worked well for us

  • ok i have a very silly sounding one....wipe warmer....life saver in our house. I thought it was the most rediculous thing I had ever heard of, until its January and the middle of the night and the second you touch a freezing cold wipe to a newborns bottom and they go ballistic....i swear by it! again, so silly i know!

  • I second many of the other things posted, but if I had to bring my baby to a desert island with only one thing it would be The Miracle Blanket.  That thing is an effing miracle of a blanket.  The A&A blankets are also awesome, but I wouldn't have survived newborn twins without our Miracle Blankets.

  • 1.) Breast Pump - I am so glad that I bought one. I was going to breastfeed for the first 6 weeks and my first had latching problems and I ended up just pumping for around 6 months and had enough milk frozen for him until he was a litle over 9 months. I ended up doing the same with my second even though he did not have problem latching.

    2.) Bouncer

    3.) Swing
