diapers...which size and how much of each?

so within the next couple of weeks I am going to put the plan in action of picking up a pack of diapers each time I'm at the grocery store/Target to start stocking up.  what size do I need to start with and how many of each pack do you think I should get?  Just want to start getting a good pile stocked up and will save the receipts in case we need to return smaller ones for larger ones or vice versa.

Re: diapers...which size and how much of each?

  • I'd say get more size 1s than newborn. DS was in size 1 and size 3 for a long time. You might find you like a different brand though. Pampers work great for us, but I hated Huggies. They always leaked on DS, but other people swear by them.

  • I agree with PP, to not get too many newborn sizes. And as pp mentioned, I wouldnt stock up on too much of one brand. Pampers did not work well at all for DS, and eventually we came to love Luvs! Maybe stock up on just a few packs, but what about getting gift cards or something instead?

  • We prefer Pampers but I know others don't care for them.  We used newborn for about a month.  The other sizes I really don't know.  LO is 16 months and has been in size 5 for probably four months now.  He has a long torso and the 4's seems short.  My niece is 2 1/2 years old and is in a size 4 and potty training.  It's hard to say how many of each you need.  When LO was tiny he used about 8-10 a day but now it's like 5-6 day depending on the day.

Also Huggies fit different than Pampers IMO.  For our next LO, I'm planning to buy the large boxes off of Amazon (I'm a prime member so I'll use subscribe and save) and just get a couple boxes of each size to have on hand.  Right now we buy a box of 172 for approx $26.  Best deal I've found so far.  (Even better than stacking coupons at Target.)

  • We only bought one pack of newborns and kept the receipt with the first LO. Target only does returns for 90 days, so keep that in mind. Turns out that DS was in newborns for 3 weeks or so, but my niece never was, so I'd be careful with that size. DS was in size 1, 3, and 4 for a long time each.

I mostly just bought a giftcard every week like a PP suggested, and then used those to buy diapers later. Though, now I use Amazon and think it's the cheapest.

  • DS was big so I don't think we used newborn size at all. I have to say, we love the Target brand diapers. I just got him Pampers because they were on sale, and they leaked quite a bit. But, every kid's body is different, so every diaper will fit differently.
  • While it's a great thought, I actually wouldn't recommend doing that.  You may find that you like a certain brand over another or that your LO is allergic to one of the brands.  Some people stock up and end up wasting them (even if you save the receipts good luck finding them or having the energy to return them after not sleeping for 4 days ;)

Unlike the PP, we hate Pampers diapers b/c they leak.  We only use Huggies. As far as sizes, definitely don't buy a lot of NB sizes.  My kids never wore them... even in the hospital. DD was in size 4 for like 6 months and has been in size 5 for a year.  Kids go right through the smaller sizes and stick to one of the "bigger" 3, 4 or 5 sizes for awhile, but you never know until the baby is here.  My kids were huge (both were over 9lbs born early) but if you have a small baby, you may need a lot of 3's.  You just never know.

  • We got a lot of diapers, of varying size and brand, from a diaper shower. I can't recall how long he wore any size, but Wal-mart is pretty forgiving on exchanges. As long as they aren't open, that is. I just sent H to the store with a brand or size we didn't like or need and exchange it for what we did need.

We used Huggies. I don't think we used NB for long, but I think he was in size 1 for quite a while. And 3s too. DS was smaller though (7 pounds when he was born) and he didn't rapidly gain a lot of chunk like most babies. He has always been pretty slim.

  • Well I am a FTM but that doesn't really seem like the best plan to me. How will you know what size your baby will be?  Or what brand you will like best ~ even in this post we have seen people who swear by pampers and people that hated them.  I would get (when you are closer to delivery) 1 pack of newborn and 1 pack of the next size up, your DH can always run out.  We are cloth diapering so we have all of ours but will buy 1 pack of newborn pamper swaddlers to get us started and through the black poop stage!

Good Luck ~ but save your money for now ~ maybe set some money aside every two weeks and have that as your diaper fund for when baby arrives.

  • Originally we signed up through Amazon Mom Subscribe and Save for diapers.  DS jumped from size 1, to 2, to 3, very quick.

We decided to start cloth diapering when he was 3.5 months old.  However, my MIL and FIL still use disposables on him and he's been in size 4 since he was around 8 months or so.  We sort of skipped over size 3 because of cloth diapering.

All that being said, we have a bunch of size 1 and 2 disposables left over from our Amazon Mom membership (we bought WAY too many, even though we knew we'd be changing diapers more with a newborn than an older baby).  It seems that once a kid hits around 9 months, their growth slows down.

I think unless you want a ton left over, pace your tiny diaper buying but load up on the larger ones (size 3+)

Does any of that make sense?? lol Sorry it's so long winded.

  • Definitely start with 1s. The newborns will only last (if you're newborn isn't already too big for them) for only a couple of weeks. It's not worth it. You can buy a pack or two if needed when the baby is born.

  • I'm with the folks who said it sounds great in theory but not really a good idea.  Diapers are always available and on sale so you'll be able to find good deals even after your baby is here and you've decided which kind of diapers you like.  You could always start putting money on gift cards to hold on to if that works as a better saving method for you.

  • No, no, no.  I didn't even like getting diapers at my shower with DD and I know I will probably get tons with these twins but I'd rather have a gift card for later when I know what brand works best and what size.  I had soooo many packs of diapers I gave to other moms with DD because only pampers worked for her.

This. I really don't get the stock-up-on-diapers plan. Of anything, diapers are about the EASIEST thing to get after the baby is born - they are always at the supermarket and Diapers.com or Amazon will send them to you within a day or two - and then you will know you are getting the right size and type for your baby. If you really just want to be putting away money, I'd put it on gift cards or better yet, open another savings account and have an auto-transfer each week/month from your other account to force you to do it.

  • I agree with everyone - just stash money. Or, just let it become part of your weekly expenses. It's there to stay :)

We started out using Pampers Swaddlers. My DD only wore NB for a couple weeks, if that. Then, I stopped liking Pampers so much (I like that they are thinner, but always seemed to be damp). I used Huggies for awhile, and then started buying the Costco brand, which I love (it's a lot like Huggies). You just never know.

  • DD was 8lbs 5.5oz and never worse newborn size. We went through 12/day the first month or so. We used pampers buggies but once pampers introduced their dry-max technology I stopped using them bc they gave DD the worst rash of her life! I also started CDing around 4m but used a disposable at night until about 18m or while on vacation.

I wouldn't stock up for all the reasons others mentioned plus diapers take up a lot of space!

  • perssonally i say wait.  if you want to buy ahead i would say buy gift cards and then use those to buy diapers once the baby is here.
