Playgrounds in Del Ray/Old Town

I know LindseyJW lives in Del Ray, so hopefully she'll chime in but I'm going to be going to brunch with DD and my mom tomorrow and was hoping to take DD to a playground with baby swings afterwards since it's supposed to be nice. Where are there playgrounds around there? We could also pop into Old Town, so playgrounds there would be fun.

  • There's a nice fenced playground near the YMCA that has swings.  I usually park on Duncan if I stop there with the car.  Duncan is next to the Hyundai dealership.  Take Duncan down past Dewitt, and the park will be on the right.  There's also a small playground on the other side of Mt. Vernon, closer to Commonwealth, between Monroe and Mason that has swings.

Enjoy your morning in Del Ray!

  • Infant swings are hard in Alexandria!  The best spots are George Mason school (1) on Cameron Mills and The Pit (2), which I think is on Overlook (I know exactly where it is, but I never pay attention to the street name).  Mt. Vernon school on Mt. Vernon in Del Ray has a playground, but I'm pretty sure there are no infant swings.  There's also a really cute "soft" playground at Commonwealth and Del Ray that DD loves.  If there aren't too many big kids it's fine for a crawler.  No swings, but some other fun stuff.
  • ditto both suggestions!

there is also a much smaller playground on Hume between Commonwealth and Mt. Vernon that has two infant swings. we often go here because it's a couple blocks from home, but the one behind the YMCA is much nicer. and sunnier...the one on Hume is often shaded.

there is a new playground on Commonwealth at Del Ray Avenue that has some features for smaller children, and soft flooring. before she started walking primarily, Audrey loved crawling around there. perhaps LO can crawl around there, too. no swings though. there is a sitting wall surrounding this park, so it kind of forces parents to be engaged in what their kids are doing (or at least watch), which i like. i really hate when parents (esp parents of bigger kids) bring their kids to the park and look the other way when they act like hellions.

  • Hi there, enjoy your brunch in Del Ray! Others have already mentioned the little parks there, but if you do come to Old Town there are several with infant swings to choose from. Towards lower King Street, take a right on S. Royal and just after Prince street is a great "tot lot" that has lots of push walker toys, slides and climbing structure for the older ones, small see saw, and 2 infant swings. The ground is mulch and concrete. There is a huge park between Lee and Union streets, at the end of Wolfe, that overlooks the river and is a great view. There are infant swings up at the top. That might be a bit of a drive just to go to from Del Ray - but if you wanted to know for the future or another brunch out in Old Town.  I would really recommend the new small park at the end of Del Ray Ave. (if you turn up from Mt. Vernon between Del Ray pizza and St. Elmos) and Commonwealth that others mentioned. It opened when my daughter was just walking, but it is great for crawlers too as they can safely watch and navigate as long as it isn't too busy.
