Cloth Diapering

17 month old in cloth

Ok..I have a 17 month old BIG boy. He is around 32lbs. It sounds like a lot, but he truly isn't really all that chunky, just tall and thick....maybe with some chunky thighs lol. Anyway I decided to swap to cloth because he keeps a diaper rash and constantly pees out of disposables. I am also due with another boy in June and want to cloth diaper him as well, so I figured a few months head start would make it less frustrating. I really want to love it and for it to work, but it isn't. I am doing to the trial from Jilliandrawers.com and he has leaked out of the flips ( didn't think it would work because nothing keeps the insert in place), also completely soiled his pants in the kissaluvs marvel, thirsties fitted last 10 minutes, Prefolds and a cover don't fit, and he slept in the fuzzibunz large the first night no leak, then last night peed all out of it, he also leaked out often bum genius freetime quickly. The thirsties pocket diaper also seemed to do ok. Any other suggestions? I have the Bum genius OS 4.0 & fuzzibunz OS coming tomorrow to try those. Am I doing something wrong? Is he just too big? Help! I want this to work! Also I did wash them 6 times and dry them 2 times before use.

Re: 17 month old in cloth

  • I haven't actually tried this yet (because I don't have a baby yet!), but I have been lurking on this board for a little while... and usually when I see a question like this posted, the other posters suggest fitteds with wool. Though, like I said, I don't have any personal experience with this, so perhaps some REAL "expert" will be of more help!

  • You only have to do multiple wash/dry cycles on things with natural fibers. Stuff like the Fuzzibunz only have to go through one cycle and they're good to go.

What size prefolds/covers are you using?

What are you stuffing the pockets with? You may need to add another insert, or you  may need to switch from microfiber to a natural fiber like hemp or bamboo (more absorbent).

Thirsties Fab Fitted, at least in my experience, don't really hold enough in once your LO gets bigger. DD peed out of them after she was maybe 6-9 months old. I might think about looking on diaperswappers or spots corner and see if you can find some reasonably priced used WAHM fitteds that have more absorbency and would work better.

For overnight, you may have to just stuff your pocket more, or consider fitteds and wool. When DD is in a pocket for overnight, it's stuffed with 3 layers of hemp wrapped in a cotton/MF cloth.

Those are some ideas to start. You may just have to play around with adjusting a few things here and there to see what works.

    What are you washing with?

  • He is either peeing through or out the diaper within 30 mins to an hour. I was washing with a homemade detergent made of baking soda, washing powder, borax, and soap. I bought a 100% natural at the health food store today and washed them all with that and did an extra rinse cycle. If I can't use one insert or 2 that aren't huge then I am just going to have to go back to disposable. He has to fit in his clothes and most of the diapers are already huge in the butt.

  • I had issues with homemade laundry detergent. I had stink issues  but I've heard it can also cause issues with how much the diaper can absorb. What specific detergent did you buy at the health food store? !00% natural doesn't mean it's CD safe. Jillian's Drawers has a list of what is safe to use. Is what you got on that list?

  • I got ecos and it had a 4 star rating on another site that rated detergents for cloth diapers. It has no enzymes, fragrance, brighteners, or bleach. There is no place in town that carries cloth diaper detergent and I only have so many days in the trial. If this detergent doesn't do well then I will suck it up and order a cloth detergent.
