Working Mommy Sleep Question-Clicky Poll

I was wondering for all those working moms out there--how much sleep are you getting??  DS usually goes down at 8:30 and me around 10:30-I have a hard time falling asleep.  I pump in the morning before he wakes up and have a half hour drive to work so I end up getting up at 5:30 in the morning. And DS wakes up multiple times for a paci pop.  I yeah 8 hours at most for me, minus waking multiple times.

  • I am a person who thrives on 8-9 hrs.  With baby, I am back to 6-7 but with interruptions.  I was just thinking how exhausted I am before seeing your post, but happily (enough) so.  How is it for you?

  • I voted SS. I am a 9 hour a night person. Since having a baby, I haven't had that much sleep. Period. I go to sleep between 830p and 9p cause I'm so tired and wake up at 6a. According to this schedule, I get almost 10 hours! But, Isaac wakes up twice, one waking of which I get up for (hubby gets the other) and I'm up for 30 min and it takes me about that long to fall asleep. I wake up for EVERYTHING...the 11p waking, the midnight scream, the 1a shuffle against the crib bars, the 330a feeding...So, although it may seem like I get 10 hours, it's broken. On a good night, I can get 7 hours of sleep in a row, but that's only happened twice. I average between 3 and 5 hours in a row nightly.

  • I have really bad insomnia, so with a baby that still wakes 2 or 3 times a night, I'm not sleeping hardly at all. I usually crawl into bed around 11 or 12, and then DS wakes a few times, which takes me about an hour or so to get back to sleep. We wake up at 7, if not sooner. Lately DS has been wanting to start his day at 4. I generally catch up on sleep on the weekends. DH does some bonding time so I can sleep in.

  • On an average night:  in bed by 10p.  Up at midnight with DS, up again at 2a, 4a, 5-6a. Up for the day at 6:30a.

That's not much sleep!  I work a full 40 hour work week.

I feel exhausted some alot of day too.  And when DS is being crabby it shows.  I used to get 8-9 hours day too, if not at night an after work nap.  Now the nights are just too busy.  I can't wait to stop pumping to get that extra 1/2 in the morning.

  • I have no clue!! My LO doesn't give me good stretches lately, so we bed share. I don't know how much actual sleep I get - just that I'm usually in bed for about 9 hours, but I'm definitely not sleeping for all of that. I nurse at least 3 times in there, and I can't always get immediately back to sleep.
  • LO's sleep has regressed a lot in the past two weeks - down at 7, but up at 11, 1, 3 and then hopefully sleeps through until we all get up at 6:30. So even though I'm technically in bed for 8 or 9 hours, I'm only sleeping in 2 hour increments.

Honestly, I'm exhausted.  I work a 50 hour week minimum, plus 1 hour commute (30 minutes there and back), plus going to school one night a week and the associated homework.  Last weekend I asked my husband to sleep on the couch with the monitor on Friday night so I could get a full night's sleep (Happy Valentine's Day honey!), and I felt SO different when I woke up the next morning - I was like a different person....

  • I am one of the lucky ones whose DD sleeps solidly through the night.  She goes down between 7:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and is up around 6:30 a.m. or later.  But, I'm still getting up at 3:00 a.m. to pump to make sure she has enough breast milk for daycare.

Before having DD I thought I needed at least 8-9 hours a night but I seem to be functioning pretty well with my interrupted sleep.  And granted, I'm literally going out to the living room pumping for 15 minutes, checking on DD, and heading back to bed.  I think that is completley different then actually having to get up and tend to LO.  I know exactly how long I'll be up and that I can go right back to bed.  When LO is up it's so much more stressful because you're never really sure how long it is going to take to get them back down.

It just isn't quite enough time (20 mins to daycare, 10 more to work) and I get distracted-- I massage my breast for about the last 5 mins of 20 mins pumping to get a little more milk.  That would be when I am getting into town and I don't want to take the chance of not concentrating on driving. Plus I just can't help but think of unhooking at the babysitters as awkward. And another parent (father) drops off at the same time as me.

I work overnights so I don't get home until almost 8am.  I usually I try to sleep from 10-1 or 2 and then grab another couple of hours after DS goes to sleep.  I really need to try to sleep more but I feel guilty sleeping when DS is awake during the day, even though my husband is there.  I'm afraid I'm going to miss something!

I could've posted this myself. I love working night shift as I can put my son to sleep and then be there when he wakes up. BUT I don't sleep much at all. I kind of got used to it even with being on night shift. I feel like I will miss something also. I thrive on cat naps and/or when he takes his long nap in the middle of the day.
