Hi everyone! I am new to TTGP, and am just wondering what you all do or don't do while trying to conceive. I don't know if I am KU- but I have cut out alcohol, artificial sweeteners (except for the yogurt I ate this morning that I didn't realize had it), no lunch meat, etc.
What are you doing differently even though you aren't sure you are KU or not?
Re: What not to do when TTC..
Personally I gave up caffine and tried to drink more juice (real juice not the fake stuff) and am trying to get more rest but that's about it. Good luck TTC and sending lots and lots of baby dust
It reduces your chances of conceiving, but drinking while TTC won't cause birth defects. (i.e. if you get pregnant after a night of partying, you aren't going to have a baby with fetal alcohol syndrome).
other things
-take prenatals, vit D + calcium, and omega-3 supplements
-exercise!!!!! weight loss is a fertility booster!
-have lots of sex! (ha ha)
This!
The only thing that I do different while TTC is take a prenatal vitamin and take my BBT every morning.

Artificial sweeteners in moderation, sure. Deli meats - no. The reason they're considered dangerous is the risk of listeria. If the one unheated piece of sliced turkey you have during pregnancy happens to be contaminated, then you risk birth defects and death. The risks are very small, and I'm not going to judge someone who has an occasional turkey sandwich, but you should know that moderation has nothing to do with it. That implies that if you don't have too much of it, nothing bad will happen. (Yes, your risk of eating a contaminated slice is higher if you eat it every day, but again, you could be really unlucky and the first piece you eat in 3rd trimester is contaminated.)

Ditto This.
Really? Artificial sweeteners? What are artificial sweeteners going to do to a ball of cells in the 2WW that they won't do to the rest of your body at any other given time?
Either consume foods with them or don't. This one has absolutely no link to ovulation, implantation, embryo development or fetal survival, period.
Here are the first 5 articles I found. I'm sure I can find more if you're still interested. (Sorry, not clicky, I'm on a Mac!)

Lots more out there. The reality is that alcohol consumption, even moderate amounts, probably affects fertility. But so does a lot of stuff, from sugar intake to exercise. Everybody has to decide what to do for herself.

It sounded like you didn't since you specifically said deli meats in moderation were ok. I wasn't trying to be snarky. And I agree that giving them up while TTC makes no sense, but you said while KU. I wasn't making assumptions, I was going off of what you said.
Edit: For the record, I agree with you that everyone needs to assess the risk for themselves and decide whether or not to take it. The risk of getting listeria from deli meat is low, as you said, so I completely understand why women who know about listeria still choose to eat it. I also think it's not a big deal to heat it up in the microwave until it's steaming, though. I never found it to detract from my sandwich experience.

Nothing,
When I was pg last time, I did cut out a few things. But everything in moderation.
Exactly! Yes, alcohol affects fertility. But so does a lot of stuff. Putting my entire life on hold for months--dear god, I hope it doesn't end up being years, but I know it could be--just because we're TTC isn't healthy either. But I know what I'm doing, and I know I'm disregarding the medical literature in that respect. If I have to decide to change that perspective later, I guess I will.

While I did not post this and I AM a fan of "drink 'til it's pink," below are just a couple of sources.

I thought the one below was going to be an argument for "drink 'til it's pink;" however later in the article, it talks about alcohol consumption making it more difficult for women to ovulate and how alcohol doesn't provide an optimal environment for implantation.

I'm still gonna drink til it's pink. I don't think it ruins your chances...it just lessens them.

Thanks Urban for the articles. There is quite a bit of data out there that alcohol use reduces fertility. And that weight loss improves fertility. I've found google scholar is a useful tool for anyone wanting to read articles from medical journals.
That being said, I also have no plans to ditch my occasional glass of wine either.
Why did you cut meat ?
The only thing I'm doing differently is cut back on soft drinks (coke/pepsi) and drinking more water plus taking prenatal vitamin and DH is taking multi-vitamin.

My pleasure! I'm a google scholar junkie, too--but I use DH's PubMed subscription as well for science stuff. Drives me nuts when people post "sources" that aren't peer-reviewed journal articles. But I'm a researcher--it's what I do.
I read in an article about the side effects of lunch meat- and the risk of listeria. I don't really eat a lot of lunch meat anyway- really only when I go to subway. If you heat the meat for 2 minutes it is fine to eat. So to clarify I would heat my sub before eating it!

Partial Molar Pregnancy
While TTC the only thing I've done different it take a prenatal.
During CD 1-O I do whatever I want.. then after I O I usually just don't have any drunken nights but I'll have a glass of wine if I want. Honestly, so many people get pregnant under so much effed up circumstances, I really don't think cutting out deli meats during your TWW will make a difference!
Oh! and I definitely don't take Advil as even my dr. said it can bring up the risk of miscarriage because of the blood thinning properties.
But I think the best rule is:
If you will beat yourself up about doing it if something goes wrong, then DONT DO IT.
drugs. don't do them. especially when TTC.
but really, like others have said, its more about what TO do when TTC -- taking a PNV (with folic acid) and just generally living a healthy lifestyle (exercise & diet & relationships)!
