C-sections

RCS moms- if you go into labor?

If you are having a RCS but go into labor before your scheduled date, what is your plan?  I had assumed I would just attempt a VBAC since I was in labor anyway, but when I asked at my appointment today, doc told me that I just got in for my RCS then.  I was a little thrown and didn't discuss it much more...

What is your plan?  Why?

Re: RCS moms- if you go into labor?

  • If I go into labor before my RCS date, they will admit me and prep for a C-section at that time.

Due to some complications I had last time with an internal infection, my doctor and I are not comfortable with risking a VBAC.

  • Yep - if I go into labor, I'll go to the hospital and will have the c/s at that time. This will be my third c-section, and VBAC was out of the question.

  • I went into labor 3 days before my scheduled date with my son, and he was breech, so I had to have a c-section then.  It was I guess considered "emergency", but it really wasn't.  I think these things happen all the time, so they are used to it.  VBAC is not something you can decide to do.  Your doctor has to be on board.  If you want to try VBAC, you can find a doctor who is pro-VBAC.

  • If this baby is even close to DD's size, I don't want to attempt a VBAC.  Since she is already measuring ahead, my bet is she'll be as big as or bigger than DD (who was born 11 days early at 8lbs, 12 oz).  My water broke with DD and we went ahead and did a c-section, just a few days earlier than planned.  I'm not making any out of town plans for the 2 weeks before my due date in case that happens again.  Even after my water broke, we didn't consider trying vaginal delivery and just waited for the OR to open up for the c-section.

  • If your doctor is supportive of VBAC, you should be able to attempt one if you go into labor before your RCS date. I will be scheduling a RCS but will try for a VBAC if I happen to go into labor before my date and don't have any of the complications that led to DD's CS (pre-e and abrupted placenta).

I do have a pro-VBAC doctor so why can't I decide to do it?  I had discussed it with her earlier in the pregnancy when I had wanted to do VBAC originally.  I saw another doctor in the practice yesterday, so I asked him what happened if I went into labor, and he said I would just go in for my CS then.

Every doctor has different policies even within the same practice. Tell your main doctor that you definitely trying VBAC. If you don't, they tend to lean toward c-sections. Good luck! I hope you get your VBAC!

  • my water broke two days before my scheduled section. they gave me the option of laboring if i wanted to. Personally, i opted for the csection.
  • If I went into labor I would be prepped for surgery that day. I can not do a VBAC.

  • As others have already mentioned my OB and hospital take you back and do the RCS when you come in (in labor). My clinic doesn't support VBAC (plus my births will only be 12 months apart).

this is my situation as well.  I spoke to my OB about possible trying a VBAC but she said no since I already had 2 c-sections.  Bring it up again, as it may have to do with the reason you had your first c-section.

  • If I go into true labor before my scheduled date, they will prep me and give me the c/s right then.  My hospital does not allow VBAC's.

  • I just had my rcs because I went into labor a week before scheduled date. They asked me when I got there if I'd like to try VBAC. I turned it down.
