Clothing Size?

I was going to head to Carter's tomorrow and grab stuff for the LO. They are having a B1G1 free sale and I have a 40% off coupon. Do you think that our babies are going to be in 3 months clothes during the summer or 6 months? Do any 2 time Moms know if Carters clothes run small? I am going to cloth diaper so I am wondering if I need a larger size. Thoughts?

Re: Clothing Size?

  • It's hard to tell in advance because all babies are different!  My son has always generally been around the 50th percentile for height and weight.  I read Carter's labels with the words "up to" in front of the size.  So 3 month clothes fit DS when he was 0-3 months old, 6 months clothes fit when he was 3-6 months old etc.  I'm counting on DD being the same way, so I'm predicting she'll wear Carter's 6 month stuff from July-Sept.

I CD diaper too and sometimes we would have to go up a size in pants, but not often.  DS wears a lot of sweatpants and very rarely jeans or other "stiffer" pants.  Of course, boys pants are roomier than girl's leggings, so that might make a difference too.

ETA:  You can always layer sleeveless or short sleeve tops with a long sleeve underneath if LO is small and doesn't grown into those summer 6 month clothes until Sept.

  • I would get some of both. By the end of summer if the baby is matching birth months to size you will need both anyway. Dont take tags off, you can return at Carter's past 30 days. My first daughter matched up perfectly with how old she was to size, however my nephew is 3 months old and already in 6 months clothes because he is nice and chunky! Every baby is different!!
  • All babies are different but remember you'll want tiny ones in more clothing.

BTW... I just used a 20% off coupon on top of the 40%.  Google it and it should pop up if not go to their website and sign up and they should email you one.  =)

  • Ditto the crapshoot comment. I bought all "standard" sizes for DS and he was ginormous. He's been usually double the normal size. He's 9 months and in 18 months now so I had lots of wasted clothes. I've bought some basics, but am waiting until at least next tues for our growth u/s to buy more... even then I'm leaving the tags on.  I agree about carters sizes... regular 0-3, means carters 3, 3-6 is carters 6, etc. etc.

  • It's hard to tell, every baby is different. DD wore NB for almost 3 months. She was always at least 1 size behind her age. Even at 3 she wears 18 month pants. However, Carters does not have a time limit on exchanges, so I'd buy some of each size, but don't wash it yet and hang onto your receipt. Oh, and I personally think Carters runs big.

  • For DS, Carter's runs small.  BUT he's ginamorous.  He was a March 1st baby and he was in 3M right away (10 lbs, 22"), outgrew that by May and was in 6M (at 2 months he was 12 lbs 24.5") by July at 4 months (14 lbs 27") he was in 9M and by Sept. at 6 months he was in 12M (16 lbs 29.5").  He currently is in a 3T because of his height.  He's only 26, maybe 27 lbs at almost 2 years of age but he is  about 37" tall.  I must stress, these are not normal baby heights for the age, he was well above the 97% for height his entire life and DH and I are not tall people only 5'6 and 5'8 (with DH being the tallest in his entire family for at least 4 generations) but my dad was 6'2 and my 3 brothers range from 6'2 to 6'6, my sister was 5'11.  You just never know how tall your baby is going to be.

We went through a ton of clothing that first year because he was so tall.  I also found Gymboree which fits him better, it's cut slimmer and longer and he can get about 6 months of wear out of his clothing so I tend to buy things there for him.  It's maybe more expensive (at checkout) but when you add up that I'm not buying things multiple times in a season, it definitely is the cheaper route for me.
