How long can BM sit out?

I'm getting conflicting information, so I thought I'd ask here.

How long can freshly expressed, never refrigerated or frozen BM sit out for?

How long can refrigerated, but never frozen, BM sit out for once taken out of the fridge?  How about frozen BM?

Re: How long can BM sit out?

  • I EP'd and my guidelines were always the most flexible and longest from the info. I could find.  DS never had any issues drinking it or got sick/spit up.

Fresh (not in like a sunny window or warm car in the summer) - 6 to 8 hours.

After fridge - 4 hours, but probably stretched to 6 on occassion without intending to.

After freezer - just starting to use freezer stash now, and I feel like it is always off due to lipase issues, but DS takes it anyhow.  Because of my paranoia about the smell I try to limit to 2 hours or so.  I will put it back in the fridge if it's been left out less than an hour and try to not leave it out longer than an hour the second time.

  • I do the same as the poster above..6-8 hours freshly pumped in a normal temperature. 4-5 hours after being refrigerated. I haven't used any from the freezer yet.

  • Same thing as pp, 8 hours at the very most, like if I've forgotten to put it away or if its been in the diaper bag in the cold car.

I do the same 8 hours max for refrigerated because my logic is that its coming out cold, so its staying cold for a little while. If he has eaten from the bottle and I put it back in the fridge I use it that day or toss. From the freezer makes me nervous, I try not to keep that very long, I would say a couple hours sitting out.

    As far as storage.

Fridge I keep it a week.

Freezer 3-6 months, or deep freeze is 6 months to a year.

Also, breastmilk from the fridge can be heated and then cooled, then heated one more time, but you need to use it that day. And thawed from the freezer needs to be used in 24 hours.
