Bottle and nursing before bed a bad idea?

Back story: I'm back at work now, so my son's eating schedule is something like: nurse 2am, nurse 6:30 am, eat 3x 4oz bottles at DC (7:30 - 5:30), 6:00 nurse, 9:00 nurse.

The past few nights he's seemed to still be hungry after nursing at bedtime. Is it a bad idea to start letting him nurse on both sides, then of he's still acting hungry to give him an ounce or two of expressed milk?

At this time, supply isn't an issue, as I'm getting 17 - 23 ounces at work and he's only taking 12 at daycare.

Thoughts?

  • It sounds like you have just hit the three-month growth spurt.  The best thing to do would be nurse, nurse, nurse.  I wouldn't supplement with expressed milk if you don't plan on pumping afterwards to make up the difference.  Your son is nursing more and by putting him to your breast it should keep your supply up.  There would also be nothing wrong with letting him nurse on both sides if that is what he needs.

  • I agree with PPs about not giving a bottle of previously expressed bm.  I'd just nurse - it'll let your body know to make more milk for LO at that time.  But I'd definitely offer the other side if LO still seems hungry.

I was thinking supply issues or something along those lines?

I am offering him both sides and he still doesn't seem satisfied. Hopefully it's a growth spurt and we will be past this problem soon.

  • I don't know if this would work for you as your LO is older, but mine is having a growth spurt right now.  I let him feed from both breasts, and if he still seems hungry I put him back on the first breast for more hindmilk.  Then again, he's still at the age where it's taking him half an hour on each side.  I read somewhere that technically our breasts are producing milk continuously, so in theory there would be some milk for them in the 1st breast.  I'm a FTM though, so take what I say with a grain of salt.  I may not know what I'm talking about.
