How much does a routine ultrasound cost?

I was reading over our insurance information, and it looks like they only cover one routine ultrasound. I'm perfectly happy to pay for one out of pocket, but I have no idea how much they are. My doctor's office does two.

  • My 8 week one isn't covered by insurance, she said since they are doing it at the clinic it is about 3X cheaper than at the hospital, it's about $175, which I will gladly pay for...

You should be able to call and ask them a estimated figure.

  • My transvaginal u/s was around $278.  The allowed amount by the insurance was $178, which is what I had to pay since I have not paid anything on my deductible.

  • You can opt for an elective ultrasound at a private agency for about $60 ( they go up in price if you do a 4D)... however, these techs are not qualified to give you any medical information-- it is basically for gender determination and to get a glimpse at your baby :)

Speaking of this...  In some areas you can go to the u/s schools and have students do them for free.  Although there can be a waiting list for this sometimes.

  • My insurance has a negotiated rate of $195 for ultrasounds.
  • I just spoke with my insurance company and asked about what the NT scan would cost- their negotiated rate is $215.07... of which we will pay all of that, since we haven't met our ridiculously high deductible (but we will with labor/delivery, obviously).

    I think Level 1 u/s are between 150-200....

  • Call and ask your provider for the coding an then call you insurance for the price. The t/v us I had for my miscarriage was $529 with insurance adjustment. My abdominal with DD was about $250. Just depend on your coverage and provider.

This, definitely. As long as you're not wanting/needing an ultrasound for medical reasons, it's a great option. Search for 3D ultrasound boutiques in your area and most of them offer standard 2D scans as well; if they do scans before about 15 weeks or so, they tend to only offer you 2D, in my experience. I had a $39, 5 minute 2D scan at 9w6d just for reassurance.

Correct me if I'm wrong (because I'd like to know), but I believe if these techs see something concerning, they're not going to say anything to you because they're not able to give medical advice, but they might contact your doctor to give them a heads up. I know when I had an elective scan done I had to provide contact information for my doctor. I seem to recall someone mentioning this happening, so I don't THINK I'm making it up, but I could be wrong.
