Pregnant after IF

Level II ultrasound question and growth scan question.

I just got a call that my appointment for my level II ultrasound has been scheduled.  Of course it is at the same time that my dh has an appointment at. They just set me up for the first available since my OB called to schedule it. I just worry, what if something is wrong. All my tests have come back normal, but you just never know.

What would you do?

Also, I was told because I am pregnant using IVF with ICIS that I will receive growth scans every month starting at 24w, anyone else having that?  I was just surprised. Thanks.

Re: Level II ultrasound question and growth scan question.

  • Hi there!

Are you referring to the anatomy scan? I think YH might like to be there. I made mine come (he wanted to anyway) because my NT sucked and we were nervous about the results. We also found out the gender at ours, though. I don't think it's necessary that he's there, but if it makes you more comfortable (and it did me) I would reschedule it.

I did get growth ultrasounds monthly at 24 weeks, but it was because I'm high risk, not because of IVF. They're actually pretty neat. It's nice to see how LO is doing. I wouldn't think anything was wrong because they want to do them. Some docs are just more attentive with IVF/ICSI.

  • Yes, I think it is a more in depth a/s....again because of my age and IVF. It is at the hospital. I think I will call and reschedule. We know the sex already, but it is still a cool thing to be at. My dad said if all else fails he will go with me. :)

  • I would definitely NOT want to have done the Level II u/s without DH there in case something was wrong.  Can they reschedule?

I also haven't heard anything about growth scans b/c of ICSI, but hopefully someone who did it will know more about that.

  • Twenty minutes on hold and I was able to reschedule thankfully. Thanks for the advice. :)

  • Your ob must be more cautious than mine because I am not being treated any different that "normal" pregnant people even though I had ivf with icsi.

     Good luck with your scan!

Yeah...it could be that combined with my medical issues too, since I have RA and asthma as well. Who knows. They all seem to have their ways of doing things. :) Thanks.

  • We did IVF/ICSI and have had growth scans since 28w but this is due to babies being small since 25w! I have never heard of an IVF/ICSI connection to needing that! Interesting (another google moment!!) I have growth scans every 2 weeks. I'm high risk even for the high risk due to everything that is going on and will be delivering these two no later than 37w (due to IUGR in Baby B, cholestasis, GD, BP that is going up etc. I could go on! haha). Don't worry it's good that they monitor really closely because you will get extra "looks" of your baby and they will be on top of things just in case!!

I found this but it seems there is not much difference between having issues with a baby that was conceived without fertility tx. My kids are perfect just small which is probably due to our 5'1" 105lb egg donor according to my doctors.

  • I did both ICSI and AH, and I'm just getting bumped to a level II ultrasound for my A/S, instead of the regular one at my ob's. I don't think I'm getting any extra scans.

  • Hmmm, I did IVF/ICSI and so far nobody has mentioned monthly scans. I do have a level II u/s at the end of the month. I'm gald you were able to reschedule.

  • I had to have a growth scan at 28 and 33 weeks but that's because I had low PAPP-A in my NT Scan Bloodwork.  I don't understand why IVF with ICSI changes anything regarding growth.

I'm not sure about the Level II as I didn't have one ... are they concerned about something?

  • I just read the responses and my guess is your growth scans aren't due to IVF with ICSI (we also did AH) and are related to your RA and possibly your age (I don't know how old you are).

I wasn't really considered any more high risk than any other patient until my low PAPP-A.  With that I had to meet the peri at 28 weeks, have a growth scan, another one at 33 weeks and now I have to start twice weekly non-stress tests at 36 weeks until I deliver.

No they aren't concerned about anything...all of my testing has come back normal. The level II is routine due to being AMA with my OB.

The growth scans she said is recommended to all people who used ICIS. It was the first I heard of it. Only half of my embryos were done with ICIS actually but since we can't tell which ones, she wants to proceed with them.

  • I've had monthly growth scans since 12 weeks, plus cervical checks via vaginal u/s every 2 weeks from 16 weeks through 28 weeks. They are attributing this to my age and having gone through IVF, but in speaking to other patients I think my OB practice is just more scan-happy than others. I have been told that I'm not officially considered high-risk, so who knows. One doc did say that there is a slightly greater chance of premature labor with IVF babies which is why they do it, but I have never heard of that anywhere else so don't know if that's true. In any event, it's nice to be able to see my baby every 4 weeks so I'm cool with it.
