Naps?

DD will be 5 weeks tomorrow and seems to finally be coming of the newborn-sleep all day fog. She'll have hours of being awake alert now and seems to be actually napping as opposed to tiny bits of wakefulness scattered among all of her sleep.

She's way too young for me to worry about a schedule, but I'm trying to figure out her routines to see if there are any patterns emerging because right now it seems like every day is different.

How do you handle naps at this point? Where do they nap? Do you have a nap time routine or just let LO fall asleep however/wherever?

Re: Naps?

  • Mine is only 2 weeks but she is very alert and awake all the time. My goal is to have her sleep a little between each feeding. Today however, she was up from 6 to 12. I usually put her on the couch on this little bumper bed thing, or in her bouncer. Eventually she will nap in the crib, but for now I like keeping an eye on her.

  • DD naps in her swing, bouncer, or on me.  She definitely has some awake and alert periods during the day and usually a long stretch of awake and alert in the late afternoon/evening.  I've been using the Total Baby app on my phone to track her feedings and sleep to start getting an idea of her routines and look for patterns that will hopefully make getting on a schedule easier, especially when I go back to work in April.

  • my LO will be 4 weeks Saturday and we don't have a routine yet and we let her sleep when she wants to. Well pretty much. She does seem to have flipped days and nigths a bit so towards the evening we'll try to keep her awake as much as we can. But at the same time, they are so little still and the sleep is what they need. So we let her sleep if she wants to. When she's so tired ther's nothing we can do to keep her awake anyway. lol

  • Why is she too young to have a schedule? Our LO is (almost) 3 weeks and she gets fed within half an hour of certain times every day then we play and she naps. We try to keep this to a 3 hour cycle. She gets fed about 10pm every night and wakes up at 2:30-3 and then again at 5:30-6. It's not perfect but she's 3 weeks. We just try to keep to the routine as much as possible.

She naps in her bouncer/swing which is also what she sleeps in. Sometimes I hold her for awhile when she sleeps but most of the time I put her in her bouncer when she gets sleepy or when it's naptime and let her fall asleep on her own.

  • We don't stick to a schedule but we do stick to nap/sleep routines.  We don't wake him to feed him.  When he does feed, if it's during the day we'll play a bit and engage before putting him to sleep.  If it's at night we keep the lights dim and basically don't do any engaging.  Each time after feeding, in order to signal that it's time to go to bed, we swaddle him tap him or jiggle him until he's drowsy, then lay him down to sleep.

He naps in his bouncer on in our bed in his sleeper.  He sleeps for longer stretches starting at about 6pm or so, so I really think our routines have helped him get into a pattern of distinguishing night form day. (knock on wood lol)

  • Our son naps wherever. Sometimes it's in his car seat (all day yesterday), sometimes in his swing, sometimes in his crib, and sometimes on me. Yesterday was a total nightmare. For some reason he slept all day but then was awake ALL night. Seriously, from midnight to 9 am this morning. I got NO sleep. I wanted to pull my hair out. Currently, he is napping in his crib. I got a white noise app on my iPhone and have it in his crib set to "brown noise" or something like that. He fell asleep today in his swing for a bit when I ran the vacuum. Apparently, I just have to vacuum non-stop if I want him to sleep. LOL.

My son is 7 1/2 weeks old and though people (namely my mother) have told me I need to get him into a routine, that is sometimes easier said than done. I've been trying to do bath (or just change into jammies), eat, read a book, rock, and then put him to sleep. My child usually prefers not to sleep in his crib, however, so we end up in different rooms and sleeping arrangements at night. It's a real pain in the a** sometimes, especially when I'm totally exhausted (which is all the time). I'm hopeful that one day SOON he will start sleeping for longer stretches in his own bed.

  • I let her sleep when she wants to sleep, but I still wake her up at the 3 hour mark to eat if necessary. DD will nap on my chest, on her bear mat, or in her PnP.

DD is also starting to be awake for longer periods of time, so we're just doing some tummy time, walks, chores (I wear her in the Baby K'Tan), etc.
