2nd Trimester

S/o bad doctors (weight mentioned)

I went to this doctor about ttc.  We had been trying for a while and my periods were not regular.  I had been diagnosed with PCOS.  I had lost 90 lbs and he told me that the only reason we were not getting pregnant was that I was too far overweight and that PCOS did not exist.  I was 172, but I worked really hard to get there.  He told me to come back when I lost another 30 lbs.  I got referred to a re and got pregnant 2 months later.

  • More proof that an MD after your name does not make you a knower of all things. Glad you found someone intelligent to help!

  • Never forget, doctors are just people that went to school longer than the rest of us.
  • Weight can be a contributing factor in infertility, so he is right about that, My life long BFF has struggled with her weight her whole life and now is struggling with infertility.  They are quite blunt with her.  Glad it worked out well for you.  I hope my friend has the same luck.  Congrats on losing 90 pounds that is amazing!
  • Sometimes doctor's annoy me. Glad to see you proved him wrong.

When my Mom was TTC my youngest sister the doc said they couldn't have kids (we have different dads). Needless to say they stopped TTC and about three years later my mom became PG. She was still paying off the fertility treatment bills and sent him a pic of the sono with the last payment.?

  • One of my personal pet peeves is a doc that will blame EVERY thing on your weight.  Many times there really is another problem, but the doc is too blind to see past the weight to find it.
  • I was 180 when I started TTC. I talked to the docs 4 months after and they were straight with me and said I needed to lose 30-40 lbs if I wanted to cut a lot of risk out of my pregnancy. They didn't say anything about infertility, and it was about 4 more months until I got pregnant.

Since getting pg, I've dropped to 170 from changing my eating habits. So far everything is healthy.

I think weight plays a factor depending on how healthy you are. I've been pretty healthy my whole life despite being overweight, so I don't know...?

  • had a similar experience as you.  went to my OB after have months of irregular periods, and pregnancy symptoms with afn.  Went to my OBs and all she said was that I needed to lose weight.  I had tried to on my own but just couldn't.  I wasn't satisfied with her answer and switch OBs to someone many of my friends at work used.  He was awesome.  Immediately diagnosed with me with PCOS, went on metformin (lost 10+ pounds) and by two rounds of clomid I was pregnant.  It's amazing how some doctors are good listeners and care about their patients and then others just are inattentive and too busy to care.
  • Most of my friends (and myself) are overweight. Most of them have two or more kids. On the other hand, only two of my friends with PCOS have kids (ironically they are both overweight; none of my healthy weight friends with it are in a place in their lives where they're trying for kids).
  • Rediculous. I know that heavier women have more trouble conceiving because of their weight, but I was 270 lbs prepregnancy, and am doing just fine so far. I wasn't TTC, but was off the pill for 7 months when we conceived. My doc is super considerate of my weight, and although no one denies that I am overweight, she doesn't make a big deal about it. I've only gained 3 lbs during this pregnancy, and am more motivated than I've ever been to lose it once my son is born.
  • I hate doctors that don't understand PCOS. I have it and was borderline underweight prepreg, but my doctor still gave me tips on losing weight as a way to manage it. WTH?

  • That doctor = crap. I was 175 when I got pregnant, and we weren't even TTC. Good for you for finding another doctor.
  • Congrats on losing 90 pounds!  That is amazing.

I can't believe that doctor said that PCOS did not exist.

I also have PCOS and was on Clomid to conceive.  In my case I was at "normal" weight pre-pregnancy, but my sonograms and bloodwork told the full story.

I'm just glad to finally be PG. :)
