2nd Trimester

Distateful Bump description of week 22

"Your Pregnancy: Week 22

Real estate within your belly is getting tight, with growing baby leaving little room for your lungs to...well...breathe. Expect the huffing and puffing to start soon."

Ok.... I'm not a big fan of anyone making pregnancy more scary than it already is. I find that a lot of sites make comments about what is "normal" in a pregnancy and it's not really what is "normal" as much as it is their version of normal or their experience.  I've gotten to point where I don't really want to read anything about pregnancy anymore because they can make it all sound so horrible or ... deathly.

Like this description above.  At 22 weeks my uterous is right above my belly button. My baby is 13 ounces. Which is all in the "normal" range. It's a bit of a stretch to say that I'm going to start huffing and puffing and struggling to breath at just about 5 months pregnant. Surely that is not normal.  I have never seen a woman of 5 months prego huffing and puffing to breath.  If she is, she has a problem cause she is only about 1/2 way done and what is she going to be doing at 7 months?  Oxygen tank?

I just feel like I don't need to read things like this as we as woman who are pregnant have so many REAL things to be concerned with, we don't need drummed up ones.

  • I am shocked at how soon I was running out of breath, especially because I was in really good shape. I live on the third floor and I have to take it easy. And the other days I was frantically searching for my keys, and had to stop because I was out of breath.

I have this day by day pregnancy calander. THere's a lot of intereesting/helpful info, but evrry once in a while there's something obnoxious like, "some women never experience morning sickness." How nice!

  • Gotta agree with PPs. I got out of breath making the bed the other day. And I started pregnancy in good shape.

Don't get freaked out by these things. They do tend to exaggerate.

  • Ummm it is VERY normal it isn't just because of the size of the baby but because of the hormones in our bodies and all the extra blood. Wouldn't you rather know what can happen than think there is something wrong because you are having a hard time breathing??

  • I started showing really early, like at 10 weeks, so I've been gettin winded very easily since about 17 weeks. I also live on the 3rd floor with  no elevator, so the stairs are becoming harder and harder. Not sure if the info is there to make pregnancy sound scary as much as it is to let you know that you might experience it so that you don't get as worried when it comes up. That's how I try to look at it.
  • I'll be 22 weeks on Monday and I too have issues huffing and puffing and I exercise regularly. I really notice it when I'm on the stationary bike but then I think my body adjusts because it gets better after 5 minutes.
  • ::lurking :) ::

Don't sweat it. I almost always found that I experienced those things a few weeks AFTER I had read about them.

That said, I wouldn't call their description of this "distasteful"... It's very honest, and very true. If nobody had told you that this will probably happen, wouldn't you be a little concerned at a sudden lack of breath? (Mine shortness of breath hit, what seemed like, all at once around week 26-28) To me, shortness of breath is a REAL thing to be concerned with. :) (you just might agree in a few weeks...)

To me, it's nice that they're letting us know about even the sucky things, regardless of "importance". (and, the level of importance is probably different for everyone. I'm a musician... shortness of breath is very important to me.) As a FTM, I have had NO IDEA about some of the things that would happen to my body, or when.

Just ignore the descriptions you don't like... It's NBD. :)

  • I find myself out of breath too. I have for the past few weeks. At work a few weeks ago I talked to HR about my leaving and just walking from the waiting room, up the steps and into her office put me out of breath. I think I scared her cause it was noticable when we started talking and she was like "omg are you ok?!" It only takes a few seconds to catch my breath, not like I just ran a marathon but it is noticable for sure.

  • Ummm....yeah...I've been huffing and puffing for weeks now.  Good for you that you're not, but not everyone's pregnancy is not like yours. Also, I call not being able to breathe a "REAL" problem.  Not too sure why you don't, and why in the hell is talking about shortness of breath "distasteful??"

  • A main reason why pregnant women get out of breath so easily earlier on is because the baby requires so much of your oxygen.  Your sharing your supply with someone else.  It doesn't necessarily have to do with how big you are.  I've been pretty short of breath throughout most of my pregnancy, and I am a pretty small woman.

  • With DS, I didn't understand what all the fuss was, breathing wise. Now I do. With DD I am totally carrying her differently. DS remained low the whole time. DD bump blossomed early and high so I;ve been huffing and puffing practically from the start. Of course carrying a sleeping 30lb toddler up the steps to bed doesn't help!

  • I think they exaggerate to make a comedic affect. :) I do notice I get a little more out of breath lately if I run up the stairs, and I'm in pretty good shape.

I fail to see what is distasteful about this description.  Yes, pregnancy can be uncomfortable.  Why is this a cause for alarm?  You're overreacting by being so scared by it.  YOU said "struggling for breath", not the description you posted.  I'd rather have CORRECT information (ie the fetus makes things move around and might make your lungs have to work harder) than inventing things in my head about needing an oxygen tank (it being "deathly"!) the way you just did.

    Word.

I'm not seeing the big in that at all. You're getting larger, breathing is becoming more difficult at times. The end.

  • hell im almost 17 weeks and i can no longer climb stairs

  • I don't think it was distasteful... and I haven't noticed that many things that I have found scary or offensive... maybe comical or exaggerated.  I was in pretty good shape (could run 2-3 miles and exercised 4-5 a week) and I am huffing and puffing about now... some days are worse than others, but I know many women who do feel short of breath.  I would rather know from the beginning that this is a possible symptom than experience it and really worry that it's something abnormal.

  • Thank you to those who gave me sensible responces.  I feel sorry that some posters are experiencing trouble breathing just from doing light house work.  I guess everyone's "normal" is differant.  For me pregnancy has meant losing 25 lbs and being hospitalized for hypermesis.

I guess for me the "distastul" part was the idea that the baby is crushing my lungs.. which is pretty much what the description says to me.  If that sounds good to you then.... ok.

Thanks for those who responded with a level of understanding for what I was trying to say.

Ooookay. So people who disagree with you aren't being sensible? You're overreacting to the typical dumb attempts to be humorous when explaining the bodily changes in pregnancy, and now you're overreacting to other poster's opinions.  And you sound pretty judgmental about the fact that other women's pregnancy experiences are not the same as yours and that some women ARE having trouble breathing. The mommy wars are going to be fun for you!

  • I definitely huff and puff, stairs are horrible!!! I can walk fine, but stairs or hills (which my campus mainly is, boo) are not fun.

  • Lurking... but try being PG and living at almost 8,000 feet. Breathing problems are very common in pregnant women. I was never on an inhalor till I got PG with DS.

Unfortunately, sweetheart, the baby is (or will be) crushing your lungs. You can rephrase it all you want to in order to make it sound less "distasteful" to you, but this is exactly what it is. To act like it's something below your status is ridiculous. It happens to everyone, whether we want it to or not.

I don't think having a 7-10lb ball of baby goodness crushing your lungs sounds very good to anyone... but it's exactly what happens.

  • Well, break out the oxygen tank! After you start lugging around your baby in that heavy carrier while juggling 4 bags of groceries you'll find yourself getting huffy every day. Now fast forward and carry that 40 pound toddler in and out of the car a dozen times a day.

The description was meant to be funny, much like the comments on the tickers people have here. You need to google what happens to all your organs at different stages of pregnancy.

  • I was on the phone and folding laundry and my friend asked if I was running. Haha! I was glad to have a description that let me feel normal. It takes a little getting used to. DH joked that I was trying to get out of laundry.

Time to put on your big girl panties, Princess. This is pregnancy...not the land of rainbows and unicorn farts.
