Special Needs

Moving out of state and EI...

My DS is 22 months old and is receiving a lot of EI.  He has speech therapy, OT, and special instruction every week.  He is now really adjusted to his therapists and showing great growth!  We have decided to move out of state to be with family and have a better support system.  I know this will benefit us all, but I am really apprehensive about what the move will do to DS's development.

Has anyone had to move or change therapists at this point in their LO's development?  I know he will adjust but am worried about how much time it will take and set him back...

TIA!

Re: Moving out of state and EI...

  • Off the top of my head, but is there anyway you can get copies of your DS's progress from the current therapists to the new therapists?

  • Do you have an EI service coordinator?  That would be my first step.  We're planning on moving (our house goes on the market next week) and I talked to her about possible moves.  We're staying in state though so it's a little different, but she was able to tell us about other school districts and changing counties and EI service districts.

I would think they would be able to give you advice on how to streamline your move (EI wise) so there is the least amount of disruption in your LO's schedule/therapy.

Also, I would ask his therapists to write a detailed letter describing methods, techniques, positives, negatives and anything little "tricks" they've used during your time with them.

We moved from WV to VA and here they have a cost share program, EI is not free.  Regardless it was well over a month, closer to 2 before we were being scheduled through EI.  I think if your current EI team does a transfer it might be quicker.

We tried to get into private PT while waiting for EI (which is what we do now) but they had a long wait list as well.  This county actually only has one PT and she only works part time.  That was a huge issue for us because Peyton needs strict PT not OT.

Moving is never easy especially with doctors, etc.

DD1(4):VSD & PFO (Closed!), Prenatal stroke, Mild CP, Delayed pyloric opening/reflux, Brachycephaly & Plagiocephaly, Sacral lipoma, Tethered spinal cord, Compound heterozygous MTHFR, Neurogenic bladder, Urinary retention & dyssynergia, incomplete emptying, enlarged Bladder with Poor Muscle Tone, EDS-Type 3. Mito-Disorder has been mentioned

DD2(2.5): Late term premie due to PTL, low fluid & IUGR, Reflux, delayed visual maturation, compound heteroygous MTHFR, PFAPA, Bilateral kidney reflux, Transient hypogammaglobulinemia, EDS-Type 3

So true!  DH actually turned down a promotion because he didn't want to move us away from our current medical team.

We moved 1.5 miles away--so you wouldn't think it was that big of a deal, but it changed our county.  It really delayed our preschool transition stuff because counties work independently of each other and are allowed xx number of days to "make it work."

I told DH we are never moving again :)

  • We've been thinking about moving for a while and ended up deciding to stay put (well, we sold our house, but are renting just a few blocks away) because we're really happy with DS's medical team right now and have found a good set of therapists/programs. We are planning to decide in the next few months whether we want to make a transition over the summer coinciding with a new school year and DS transitioning out of EI or wait until he's actually in K in a few more years. I really want to be one more move and done. Having a special needs kid definitely adds to the complexity of moving/life/family/etc.
  • Thanks for all of your thoughts and advice everyone!  For awhile I did think that moving would not be a good idea, but have decided it is best.  We have no family anywhere near us and with the move we will have a lot of family close by and support....  It will be hard at first but worth it in the long run:)

  • I have moved a lot (different states) being part of a military family. I have dealt with EI in 3 different states. In 2 of the states it took less then a month to get services started - but do remember that you will have to go through the paperwork and evaluation process again. By far, the last move took the longest - stopped EI in KS late August 2011 and didn't start new services in TN until early to mid-October 2011.

Ask your current therapists for basically a letter stating what they have been working on and improvements seen. You'll want one from each therapist. Even though the EI people in the new state will probably want to do an eval, here in TN, they accepted the evals from the KS EI therapists since they had been done within the past year.

The other thing I would do is contact EI for the county you are going to be moving to. You can typically find this information online and you can then contact them to give them a heads up as to when you will be in town, who to call when you get to town, ask them if they need anything from your current EI therapists, etc.
