Stay at Home Moms

What did you want to be when you grew up?

As a kid, what was your dream? Did it happen?

Re: What did you want to be when you grew up?

  • For me, I never once had a career dream, never an career aspiration... I only wanted to be a mom. That's all, never wavered. Never planned to go to school... just planned to be a mom, knew that it would happen that somehow I would be able to afford to stay home (looking back, should have planned SOMEthing...lol) but it did work out! Took quite a bit longer than I anticipated, but I got here.
  • Loading the player...
  • A broadway dancer or a teacher...LOL. Neither one of those happened. I fell in love with a boy who joined the Marines. Never, ever did I consider being a stay at home mom. I didn't know anyone who "stayed home." Even my grandmothers worked outside the home. It was never on my radar until I married DH.
  • i always knew i wanted to do something related to writing...i ended up in journalism...worked at a newspaper for 5 yrs. then i went back to school o be a hs english teacher...worked ft til the kiddos came along...now pt. so lucky to be doing what i love and spend a ton of time with my little ones too!
  • Honestly?  I wanted to be a fighter jet pilot.  Or a mob hit-person.  Yes, really.

Once I was a little more grown up, I realized I had an affinity for accounting so I went to school for that and did that for a little while and then ended up in IT which I like a LOT more than bean-counting.

My new "when I grow up" dream job is test-driving high-end cars.

  • I wanted to be a nurse (which I am) or a truck driver.  Never thought I would actually stay home and raise babies, but now I can't imagine doing anything else.
  • Since probably 2nd grade I have always wanted to be a teacher. That is what I focused all of my efforts on throughout school/college. I have my teaching degree, but I was never a full time teacher. I was an Instructional Assistant (read TA) at a great school, but got passed over for a teaching position after 2 years. So we decided to start our family. I worked one more year while I was pregnant, but the pay didn't cover child care...and here I am. I may go back to teaching some day, but I'm not sure. I really like being home for our daughter/future kids.

  • Always wanted to be a teacher- I jumped around from high school English to kindergarten, but always a teacher. I was already dating DH when I went to college and had decided that I wasn't going to work ft, so I went to school for a more vague degree of Child and Youth Services. I nannied, taught preschool, and worked at a daycare before having DD.

  • A waitress, a ballerina, and a nurse. Never did any of the three, and it's probably a good thing because it turns out I'm not athletic and I don't like dealing with the general public.

I'm not sure any small child ever says "I want to grow up to be a database programmer," which is what I did do before becoming a SAHM (after getting a biology degree and dropping out of law school...I was a bit scattered in my 20s).

That's funny. I wanted to be a vet, a spy, or a con like the guys in movies like Ocean's 11. I always thought of the last two as being pretty much the same thing. Before I stayed at home I was in banking. It wasn't my dream job but, as i grew in my field, I did develop a passion for what I did.

  • It changed all of the time. Vet, marine biologist, archaeologist (got to do that one, not nearly as glamorous as my 7 year old self thought), broadway singer, environmental scientist (did this one too), writer, lawyer, historic preservationist, priest (I got in an argument with one in CCD about why I couldn't be one when I was 10), occupational therapist, teacher (this is where I ended up, and my best fit). Staying at home with the kids was definitely never on the list. I actually took a lot of convincing when I was PG to do it.

  • a teacher. And I was :)

I also always knew I wanted to be a SAHM. That was always a given for me for whatever reason, not a question. So that worked out too :)

  • I always said I wanted to be a chef and then a teacher. I was never a chef but I was a teacher.

I always knew I wanted to be a mom also and stay home and I am lucky to do that.

  • I wanted to be a truck driver from about 5 until 7.  I ended up in corporate finance.  I really just liked the CB radio and talking to truckers.  We had one in our car because we traveled a lot with just my mom.
  • I wanted to be a teacher. I'm pretty sure it started when I was probably in 5th grade, I'd pretend to be a teacher when I got home from school... Embarrassed

I was a teacher from age 23 to age 28... Loved it, but love my LO even more. I'm not even sure if I will ever go back (once LO is old enough for school). H makes enough to support us, if I never go back.

I now feel like I dream of being the mom who is involved in every activity that my children do... Also, with LO #2 on the way, I definitely wouldn't go back until he/she was old enough for school.

  • Finn's class was asked this in a preschool recently. The answers were hilarious. Three of the kids said they wanted to work at McDonald's, two little girls said they wanted to be brides, and then another little girl said, "I don't want to be a bride, I think just a bridesmaid."

I wanted to be a vet. Then I realized I how much science you need to take for that.

  • I always wanted to be a nurse, and am one.  Although I stay at home now.  And, the career never was what I imagined it would be, so it was kind of a dissapointment.  I love taking care of people, but hate the politics and ethical issues that go along with any career in healthcare.  Kind of glad I'm out of it right now.

  • For years I was sure that I would be a princess ballerina. I had high aspirations. :) Once a little older, I wanted to be a veterinarian, and I even got the chance to work in a vet clinic one summer. I think I've always just assumed that once I had kids I would SAH. It's what my mom did, and I loved having her around.

Currently my plan is to be a Doula when I "grow up." :)

  • I went back and forth between an actress and a marine biologist. But, I was HUGE into Shark Week when I was a kid. Sometimes I also wanted to be a writer, but that was because I always had my nose in a book. I was in college when I got married (and then got pregnant), so I didn't get to finish my English degree. Which was fine with me; I had no idea what the heck I was going to do with it.

When we're done having kids, and they get a bit older, I'm going to go back to school and then start working. I love being home with DS right now, but it's definitely  not something I want to do for the rest of my life.

I'm still torn between switching to a Theater major, or a major in Animal Biology Smile. At least my interests haven't varied much.

I wanted to be an astronaut.  I loved Sally Ride.  Challenger blew up on my 8th birthday and I knew all the facts about it.

Now it's laughable because I'm aware that science is my weakest subject.  Then there's the fact that the shuttle program has been shut down...

This is so funny. I have a blog post about what I wanted to be when I grow up and the title is "envious astronauts."  When my K teacher asked us what we wanted to be, I feel like everyone wanted to be an astronaut. I said "a Mommy" and the teacher corrected me and asked what "job" I wanted Indifferent (clearly, she had no children!)  I knew being a SAHM was the "job" I wanted, but I was 5 and didn't want to argue, so I said a ballerina. And now those astronauts are accountants and auto-mechanics and i'm what I really wanted to be  Stick out tongue

When I was a bit older, I wanted to be a 1st grade teacher or a surgeon. Since med school was so intimidating, I went for early childhood Ed and English. Then I got a job in the Financial industry hahahahaha

  • Haha, my childhood career dream was to be a Pediatric Neurosurgeon. I wanted to be a doctor so bad, but then I got passed elementary school, realized how hard math was (and started failing at it), and moved on to other dreams.

  • First it was a secretary--I love organizing, filing, etc. but then I found out they do not typically make much money. I still think it would be a fun job. Maybe when LO is in school just for some extra cash.

Then it was a nurse. But then I realized I don't like blood or needles, so that wouldn't work either. Still not interested.

Then when I started working my way up the chain at my last job, I wanted to become the CEO eventually. Then I met DH, got married and realized I wanted to be his wife and mother to his children. And that's what I am! :) Climbing the corporate ladder just didn't interest me anymore.

  • Ditto to astronaut. I was very into it...every single school project that I did was related to space. I wrote NASA a couple of times. They sent me a picture of Sally Field. : ) And I sent away for promotional stuff for Space Camp, to try and convince my parents to send me. I think they still have the VHS at their house. They didn't send me to Space Camp, but we did take a family trip to Cape Canaveral. And my dad bought me astronaut ice cream, which I thought was super cool at the time. I tried developing a habit for Tang, but it was just too gross.

Actually my dream of being an astronaut died when I learned that you needed to be good at math. I ended up getting my masters in social work instead.

  • I always wanted to be a mom.  It took a bit longer then orginally planned but, I'm here now and love every bit of it.  I went to school for elem. ed which I loved.  Then received post grad in special eduction ED/LD.  That was much more challenging for me but, I still enjoyed it.  I don't plan on going back to work anytime soon but, I would love to go back to school for OT or speech.  Hmmm, you never know.

  • As a little kid I wanted to be an actress lol! Then as I got older I wanted to be a historian. I got about halfway through grad school, saw the reality of the job prospects, and decided not to continue on that path. I was taking a step back and reevaluating to figure out what I wanted instead when I had a surprise pregnancy and have not returned to work. I will eventually return to the work force, although I have no idea what in yet.

  • don't you think most moms love their children more than their jobs! sorry, part-time teacher here who is involved in every aspect of her 3 and 5 year old's activities!
